They Called Us Love

April Holden is from St Helens, Merseyside. As a child she suffered from persistent ill health, and was both physically and emotionally fragile. Coming to faith in her teens, she became convinced that God was calling her to work with street children in Africa. While at university she applied to Africa Inland Mission, but they rejected her because of her chronic health problems. She then trained as a teacher, and during this period became filled with the Holy Spirit. In due course she was accepted by Operation Mobilization, who sent her initially to Egypt for training. While there she had an opportunity to move to Sudan, where the needs of the street boys were most acute: many had been traumatized by war, or were the offspring of sex workers, or had fled abuse. She opened a series of centers, despite ongoing infirmity caused by arthritis in her spine and frequent, severe muscle spasms. When the Americans invaded Iraq in 2003 the Sudanese reacted angrily, attacking anyone who looked American. One day, faced with an angry mob, April was protected in her car by four large men who held the crowd at bay while she escaped to a nearby compound. The following day she looked for them to thank them, but the manager of the compound assured her he had been alone. After harrowing experiences during the separation of North and South Sudan in 2011 she returned to Britain, emotionally and physically exhausted, and OM insisted she took a sabbatical. Within months however she was back in action, this time from a base in Zambia, where she continues to train workers from surrounding countries. Her team has also begun to train professionals like police officers who are already working with vulnerable children. Her passion is to prepare missionaries to serve as facilitators alongside African churches and communities, mobilizing and equipping them to work with homeless children and youth in a godly, professional, and sustainable manner. She continues to work tirelessly to this end.

Devil At My Heels
$14.99Athletically gifted, Louis Zamperini propelled himself from the tough streets of Southern California to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and to an NCAA mile record at USC that stood for 20 years. When war came he left the track for a B-24-a move that would have heartbreaking consequences. On a routine mission his plane crashed into the shark-infested Pacific and he would drift 2,000 miles for 47 days before being found by the Japanese. As a prisoner of war, Zamperini endured two years of horrible torture and humiliation at the hands of a psychopathic guard nicknamed “The Bird.” Yet Zamperini endured and returned home a hero.
Unfortunately, the terrible memory of his experiences haunted him. Zamperini turned to alcohol and spiraled into the depths of despair until a young preacher named Billy Graham helped him rediscover the faith that would eventually lead him to return to Japan and personally forgive all his now-imprisoned captors. Moving and unforgettable, terrifying and inspirational, Devil At My Heels is not to be missed.

7 Last Words
$18.99Based on his talks at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Good Friday 2015, the New York Times bestselling author and editor at large of America magazine offers a portrait of Jesus, using his last words on the cross to reveal how deeply he understood our predicaments, what it means to be fully human, and why we can turn to Christ completely, in mind, heart, and soul.
Each meditation is dedicated to one of the seven sayings:
*”Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
*”Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
*”Woman, this is your son” . . . “This is your mother.”?
*”My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”?
*”I thirst.”?
*”It is finished.”?
*”Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”With the warmth, wisdom, and grace that infuse his works, Father James Martin explains why Jesus’s crucifixion and death on the cross is an important teaching moment in the Gospels. Jesus’s final statements, words that are deeply cherished by his followers, exemplify the depth of his suffering but also provide a key to his empathy and why we can connect with him so deeply.
