Christology (Theology of Jesus Christ the Son)

  • Yeshua Ha Mashiach

    $15.49

YESHUA HA MASHIACH Epilogue In the temple area where the trial of Jesus was being conducted by Caiaphas (high priest that year) all seventy-one members of the Sanhedrin (Jewish Supreme Court) along with the elders, the rulers, and teachers of the law, a large crowd of people had gathered. Some of those present had methodically planned this event and had already paid for one of his disciples to betray him. It was truly a “set-up” deal that brought out quite a crowd of people at about daylight that morning. These “high ranking” men were fed up with this notorious trouble-maker who was causing them to lose money by drawing such large crowds of lower-class people away from them and they were all determined to put a stop to him once and for all. A few feet away from where they stood was a room within the temple called the “Holy of Holies” where only the high priest was allowed to enter, once each year, carrying the blood of an animal that had been sacrificed for the sins of the nation. These officials were the highest authorities of their religion yet they could not see that they were going to murder the “Giver of Life”. They had no idea that this man was actually the creator of the universe, while the common folks seemed to readily accept it. Why would they bar Jesus from going behind the veil and into the “Holy of Holies”? Certainly they knew more about God than anyone else. And so, they all shouted as one: “CRUCIFY HIM!” YESHUA HA MASHIACH – (Jesus the Messiah) Who is he anyway?

Some people see Jesus’ death as a historical footnote, buried in the past. Christians understand it is much more than that, and know it has transformed their future.

But often we don’t realise how much Jesus’ last day should change our present, too.

Walking readers through Luke’s Gospel, US pastor and well-known author Mike McKinley looks at the events of the last day of Jesus’ earthly life. At each point, he pauses to marvel at the love Christ has for His people; and shows how Jesus’ people can learn from His passion, His care, and His integrity.

This unique book is perfect for both new and mature Christians. While great for reading at any time in the year, it’s particularly helpful to read during Lent or Holy Week.

A re-examination of Jesus’ way for living and what it means to be Christian

Author’s earlier works are evergreen best-sellers

Is belief in the Nicene and Apostles Creed required to be a Christian? Does science support or diminish belief in the divine? How does one live Jesus’ way in the world?

A careful study of Jesus shows that his intended legacy for us was not a set of propositional beliefs, but a way for being in the world, a way that opens us to the extraordinary opportunity of the present, a way that can convert our hurried, anxious lives into something luminous.

Our obsession with “what to believe” misses the primary message of the Bible, says McQuiston, who illustrates that the paramount message of Jesus, and even the Hebrew Scriptures, is not about what stories to believe, but how to live.

  • Who Is Jesus

    $17.99

From the author of Discovering the Da Vinci Code, this new book is the result of a ten-year study that offers concrete evidence to reconcile the Jesus of history with the Christ of faith.

Most people agree that a man named Jesus lived in the first century in the historical regions surrounding Jerusalem. But what about the Jesus many believe to be the Son of God, the Savior of the World? How can anyone know anything about Him? Over the last decade, an international group of historical and biblical scholars met each year to investigate whether faith and history can be reconciled. The twelve scholars who conducted this study are members of the Institute for Biblical Research Jesus Group.

This prestigious group of scholars identified ten rules that they applied to key events, sayings, and teachings of Jesus to determine their authenticity. The most important of these rules is corroboration. Requiring corroboration means, for example, that most of the gospel of John is not usable in this study of Jesus, since up to 88 percent of it is singularly attested. But these scholars discovered that by applying these rules, they were able to reconstruct twelve key events in Jesus’ life purely on the basis of historical authenticity.

Who Is Jesus? is an evidence-based way to bridge the gap among science, history, and faith.

In his now classic Two Powers in Heaven, Alan Segal examines rabbinic evidence about early manifestations of the two powers heresy within Judaism. Segal sheds light upon the development of and relationships among early Christianity, Gnosticism, and Merkabah mysticism and demonstrates that belief in the two powers in heaven was widespread by the first century, and may have been a catalyst for the Jewish rejection of early Christianity. An important addition to New Testament and Gnostic scholarship by this much revered scholar, Segal’s Two Powers in Heaven is made available once again for a new generation.

  • Trial Of Jesus

    $35.99

Many important issues are connected with the trial and death of Jesus, not least the question of who was mainly instrumental in seeking his death; and the manifest tendency of the Gospels to put the blame on the Jews and play down the role of the Romans has had pernicious effects throughout history. A clear historical understanding is obviously of the utmost importance and that is what this new book aims to provide. Taking account of all the most recent literature, from both the historical and the legal side, it clearly sets out the main issues that arise, and the most likely answers to the questions they pose. How reliable are the sources? Why was Jesus arrested? Was his trial primarily a Jewish affair or a Roman affair? Does greater knowledge of Jewish and Roman law illuminate the proceedings? Beginning with the arrest of Jewsus it goes through the events of his last days in Jerusalem as related by the Gospels, covering them in detail right through the legal processes to Jesus’ scouring, crucifixion and burial.

  • Forsaken : The Trinity The Cross And Why It Matters

    $24.99

My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? How should a Christian interpret this passage? What implications does the cross have for the trinitarian theology? Did the Father kill the Son? Theologian Thomas McCall presents a trinitarian reading of Christ’s darkest moment–the moment of his prayer to his heavenly Father from the cross. McCall revisits the biblical texts and surveys the various interpretations of Jesus cry, ranging from early church theologians to the Reformation to contemporary theologians. Along the way, he explains the terms of the scholarly debate and clearly marks out what he believes to be the historically orthodox point of view. By approaching the Son’s cry to the Father as an event in the life of the Triune God, Forsaken calls the church to a new reverence for the cross.

The author writes: This book has been written to say something that I have long felt, and long wished to say. We have heard much of the unity of the New Testament, and that unity is something which no one will wish to deny. But in the New Testament there is also diversity. There is no one standardized religious experience; there is no one stereotyped interpretation of the Christian faith and message. There is a company of men witnessing to what Jesus Christ has been to them, and still is. So in this book I have tried to see what Christ and Christianity and the Christian life meant to the different men who wrote the books of the New Testament.

  • Jesus We Missed

    $19.99

A respected and beloved theologian shows how a renewed appreciation for the humanity of Jesus Christ can better our biblical understanding of the Savior, strengthen our faith, intensify our relationship with him, and give us hope in the darkest hours of our lives. What do we make of passages like Luke 2 when Jesus befuddles the wise in the Temple but still is said to have “increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man”? The examples are many, but the point is simple: “The glory of God is a living man,” said Irenaeus of Lyons, a Christian leader trained by the apostle John himself. The Word did not simply become human. Rather, the Word became a specific human being, Jesus of Nazareth. In other words, he made himself just like us.

Jesus was a real man, of particular weight and height, eye-color, disposition, tempers, talents, ambition, etc. He had a mom and family. He got hungry. He got angry. He was moved to tears and compassion. He had limits. While taking special care not to minimize the Godhood of Christ, Patrick Henry Reardon helps readers come to grips with his real flesh-and-blood humanity-the confession of the Christian church for 2,000 years. If we are to grow in our understanding of Christ, growing in appreciation of His humanity is key. In Christ, God stooped as low as man to bring us on high, back into the fellowship that Adam lost.

What was there in Jesus’ person, behavior, and words that prompted not only much enthusiasm but also much hostility? This compelling portrait of the man Jesus of Nazareth by two pioneers of the anthropological study of early Christianity answers this vital question. They bring the fruit of years of scholarship to bear on a radical figure in Roman Galilee and on his encounters with others and the movement those encounters inspired. They give close attention to the everyday realities that shaped those encounters: the facts of travel, common meals, domestic space, and the interactions of bodies. The result is a refreshing new look at the man who proved so significant-and so controversial-in Western culture.

Though we read the story to find out who Jesus was, it is in the stories of the other characters who were present, from the disciples who followed him to the high priests who spoke falsely about him, that we can discover much about ourselves. Kolbell explores how each person or group responded differently to Jesus’ predicament, and shows us how their different responses represent the great range of human responses also available to us.

Messianic Rabbi Shares Compelling Case for Jesus as Messiah

Raised in a traditional Jewish family, international television host Jonathan Bernis was taught from a young age that “Jews don’t-and can’t!-believe in Jesus.” Yet in his study of the Bible, including the Torah, he found overwhelming evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really was the Jewish Messiah.

With warmth and transparency, Bernis talks about discovering Jesus in history, too, and how it was that the Jewish Yeshua became the Gentile Jesus. By presenting historic evidence that Jesus is Messiah and refuting common Jewish objections, Bernis gives Christians the knowledge and tools they need to share their Lord with their Jewish friends in a loving, effective way.

Refuting a false dichotomy between “politics” and “religion” in Jesus’ world (and our own), Jesus and the Powers rediscovers Jesus’ response to the imperial power of his day. Richard A. Horsley describes the relevance of political realities under great empires for understanding the rise of covenantal theology and apocalyptic vision in Israel’s history. Then he explores aspects of Jesus’ activity in the context of the Roman Empire. Horsley examines Jesus as an exorcist and prophetic figure and the character of his death by crucifixion. He also shows how the community life in the early Pauline assemblies gave form to a new response to imperial powers – and stimulus to contemporary readers to re-imagine their own response to political realities in our own day.

  • Historical Jesus : What We Can Know And How We Can Know It

    $20.99

This provocative little book addresses two primary questions: What does “historical” mean? and How should we apply this to Jesus?

Anthony Le Donne begins with the unusual step of considering human perception – how sensory data from sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell are interpreted from the outset by what we expect, what we’ve learned, and how we categorize the world. In this way Le Donne shows how historical memories are initially formed. He unpacks the nature of human memory and how it interacts with group memories. Finally he demonstrates how his definition and philosophy of history can be used to illuminate three dimensions of Jesus’ life: his dysfunctional family, his politics, and his final confrontation in Jerusalem.

  • Neat Jewish Stuff For Christians

    $15.49

Have you ever wondered why the Bible is so, well, Jewish?

God revealed His character and his plan for the world through His chosen people, the Jews. It was through the line of Abraham that the Bible was written. It was from this same line that Jesus was born. It was from the Jews that Jesus called his disciples, and out of Judaism the early church was born.

Neat Jewish Stuff for Christians reveals many facets of ancient Jewish religious and cultural life which Jesus used to help His listeners understand His teachings. Through understanding these rites and customs, God’s plan for drawing us into relationship with Him is revealed.

Neat Jewish Stuff for Christians brings the reader to a better understanding of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and the message of Jesus. Questions for discussion are included after each chapter. As Dr. Teitelbaum sums up: “Christians grow in worshipful appreciation of Jesus when His roots in Judaism are understood.”

While many people have problems with the church – including most churchgoers – the person of Jesus is an indispensable force in the achievement of any authentic spirituality. The conflict between faith and experience is eased in the rediscovery of the essential unity and simplicity at the heart of Jesus’ teachings. Embarking on this journey of rediscovery, this book takes as its starting point a question that Jesus himself asked his disciples, ‘Who do you say I am?’ For the many Christians who have never taken this question seriously, Laurence Freeman explores this question in the light of some of the big issues of religious understanding:the historical reality of Jesus, the experiential reading of the Scriptures, personal conversion, the inner journey.

  • Did Saint Paul Get Jesus Right

    $11.99

Did St Paul imagine that Jesus was God?

Was St Paul a distorter of Jesus’ original message, or a faithful follower? Over recent years some critics of Christianity have claimed that while Jesus was a gifted teacher and a man of unparalleled kindness, St Paul was the true founder of Christianity, which he based on a delusional mistake: the idea that Jesus was God. This theory has found its way into academia, churches, newspapers, and, most recently, novels. In Did St Paul Get Jesus Right? respected New Testament scholar David Wenham looks at the historical evidence for such claims. Comparing the life and message of Jesus with the writings of St Paul, he offers a thoughtful exploration of their relationship, concluding that far from imagining Christianity, Paul was the messenger of an inherited faith.

This book brings together leading theologians and ethicists to explore the neglected relationship between Christology and ethics. The contributors to this volume work to overcome the tendency toward disciplinary xenophobia, considering such questions as these:

What is the relation between faithful teaching about the reality of Christ and teaching faithfulness to the way of Christ?
How is christological doctrine related to theological judgments about normative human agency?
With renewed attention and creative reformulation, they argue, we can discover fresh ways of tending to these perennial questions.

(New American Standard Bible) How many times have you read the account of the Five Thousand being fed in Matthew and wanted to know how Mark described it? Perhaps you have read what Luke said about the Triumphal Entry, and wanted to compare it with what John wrote. JESUS THE MESSIAH According to the Gospels emerged from this need. Nathanael Ben Yehoshua Alrabi, like you, sought the answers to such questions in the life and events of the historical Jesus, therefore, this book includes all the events taken directly from the four evangelists. This narrative is not a replacement of the Bible nor is it a different gospel. JESUS THE MESSIAH… is the result of six years of consultation, of researching the scripture and of organizing the story. This is the story of Jesus’ life and events in a chronological order easily followed in a single reading.

While many know of the signal contributions of such twentieth-century giants as Paul Tillich or Karl Barth or Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the important work since their time often goes unremarked until some major controversy erupts. Here is a smart and helpful survey of the chief approaches and thinkers in today”s understanding of the person, significance, and work of Jesus Christ.

Schweitzer offers an insightful introduction to the contemporary context of Christology, in which basic questions in the discipline (and soteriology) are being rethought in light of globalization, postmodernity, and the contemporary experience of evil. He then offers a kind of typology of the current approaches and voices.

Schweitzer”s volume concludes with a reflection on the recent past and present imperatives of a discipline that virtually defines what Christianity has to offer the present age.

After all, this is not the joyous welcoming of a baby with the giving of gifts, this is the brutal death of a young man, stripped of any gifts and dignity. For the Easter story to work as a joyous occasion you have to accept two stories – the death of Jesus – a negative event – and then the resurrection of Jesus – which requires faith. Without faith, the events speak of failure, with faith, they speak of triumph. Here the drama, purpose and events of Easter interplay around these two stories – and bring out the joy.

  • Preaching Of Jesus

    $37.00

This book for preachers and students of preaching helps the reader see four distinct aspects of the rhetoric of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels: dialogical (preaching in response to challenges and questions); proclamatory (making bold and authoritative statements); occasionally self-referential (though less so than in the fourth Gospel); and persistently figurative (illustrating his message through metaphor). Brosend spends one chapter on each of these methods, closing each chapter with a sermon that models that approach. Sample sermons are by well-known preachers including Fred Craddock, Michael Curry, Tom Long, and Barbara Brown Taylor. Brosend concludes with a sermon of his own.

In this book respected New Testament scholar Pheme Perkins delivers a clear, fresh, informed introduction to the earliest written accounts of Jesus – Matthew, Mark, and Luke – situating those canonical Gospels within the wider world of oral storytelling and literary production of the first and second centuries. Cutting through the media confusion over new Gospel finds, Perkins’s Introduction to the Synoptic Gospels presents a balanced, responsible look at how the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke came to be and what they mean.

  • Pope And Jesus Of Nazareth

    $96.99

“The Veritas Series offers original volumes engaging in critical questions of pressing concern to theologians, philosophers and scholars of other disciplines. The publication of the book “”Jesus of Nazareth”” on 16 April, 2007 was an unprecedented event: never before had a reigning Pope published personal reflections on Jesus. Benedict XVI’s book engages not just with New Testament scholarship but also with fundamental methodological questions related to historical criticism. This publication, “”The Pope and Jesus of Nazareth””, provides essays by some of the leading scholars in Britain, continental Europe and the USA to highlight the insights and limits of the Pope’s reflection on Jesus. Specifically, it engages with the book from critical, cross-disciplinary and different faith perspectives. Contributors include: John Milbank, Henri-Jerome Gagey, Francisco Javier Martinez, Fergus Kerr OP, Richard B. Hays, Markus Bockmuehl, Adele Reinhartz, and Mona Siddiqui.”

Each section is brought to life by drawings appropriate to the chapter’s context, giving the reader pause to reflect.

  • Are You The One Who Is To Come

    $28.00

“Jesus understood himself as designated by God as the Messiah of Israel.” This thesis may strike many historical-Jesus scholars as dangerously bold. But through careful study of the Gospels, Second Temple literature, and other period texts, scholar Michael Bird makes a persuasive argument that Jesus saw himself as performing the role attributed to the messiah in the Scriptures of Israel and believed that Israel’s restoration hinged on the outcome of his ministry.

Bird begins by exploring messianic expectations in the Old Testament and in Second Temple Judaism, finding in them an evolving messianism that provides historical context for Jesus’ life and teaching. Next, he examines the prevailing contention that the messianic claim originated not with Jesus himself but in the preaching of the early church. Bird argues that such contentions lack cogency and often skew the evidence. Examining the Gospels and related literature, he then shows that what Jesus said and did demonstrates that he believed he was Israel’s messiah. His career was “performatively messianic” in a way that shows continuity in eschatological terms between Israel and the church.

  • Jesus And Creativity

    $18.00

The lively interest today in the historical figure of Jesus is rarely matched by theological advances in understanding his person and significance for our own time and worldview. Gordon Kaufman takes up this challenge in this bold, speculative work.

Despite the fabled difficulties of traditional Christological terms, Kaufman seeks to re-envision the symbol of Jesus within the contemporary scientific worldview. Building on his notion of God as simply creativity, he here locates the meaning of Jesus’ salvific story within an evolving universe and a threatened planet.

Outside the dualistic categories of the biblical worldview, he finds, the enormously creative and influential figure of the historic Jesus can play a vital role in the emergence and development of the cosmos and human history. Within that role, he argues, Jesus, his relation to God, and his centrality to Christian faith become clearer and our own lives and actions take on a new meaning.

  • Heaven And Earth In The Gospel Of Matthew

    $48.00

The theme of heaven and earth is a much-overlooked aspect of the Gospel of Matthew. In this work, rising scholar Jonathan Pennington articulates a fresh perspective on this key interpretive issue. He challenges both the scholarly consensus on the kingdom of heaven in Matthew and a popular dispensationalist understanding, overturning some long-held assumptions in New Testament scholarship.

Pennington argues that rather than being a reverent way of referring to God as is typically assumed, “heaven” in Matthew is part of a highly developed discourse of heaven and earth language. He explains that Matthew’s way of using heaven language serves one overriding theological purpose: to highlight the tension that currently exists between heaven and earth or God and humanity, while looking forward to its eschatological resolution. Now available in paperback, this volume will appeal to students of the New Testament, including those interested in its theological and pastoral applications.

  • Jesus And Philosophy

    $28.99

“Around twenty years or so after his death, the fiery and interesting Jewish teacher Jesus of Nazareth was made into the personification of his own teaching, and given an exalted cosmic status. Within a few decades he had been so completely buried by supernatural beliefs about himself that in all the years since it has been very difficult to make out his own voice, and quite impossible to take him seriously as a thinker. “”Jesus and Philosophy”” asks on the basis of recent reconstructions of his teaching, what was Jesus’ moral philosophy? What was his world view? And, is he a big enough figure in the history of ethics to survive the end of the classic ecclesiastical beliefs about him? The author, Don Cupitt, argues that Jesus will be bigger after Christianity, which blocked the realization of just how revolutionary a figure he was.”

  • Beyond All Measure

    $15.99

This book is about Jesus and His love for His children. It attempts to look at who we are, and how Christ relates to us in spite of who we are. Using the proper light of Scripture to view and expose ourselves, we are then enabled to see the glorious nature of His unconditional love for us. Thomas Watson rightly said, “Till sin be bitter, Christ will not be sweet.” My desire is that each of us would expand our view of Christ’s love for us. We have but a partial view of His incredible love, and so each of us needs to grow in our knowledge of it. This will be an eternal endeavor, and so I can think of very little that is more exciting than striving together to grow in the knowledge of the love of Christ. “Nothing binds me to my Lord like a strong belief in His changeless love.” – C.H. Spurgeon “We are never nearer Christ than when we find ourselves lost in a holy amazement at His unspeakable love.” – John Owen “Our Lord God must be a pious man to be able to love rascals.” – Martin Luther “He loved us not because we are lovable, but because He is love.” – C.S. Lewis

  • They Still Reject Jesus And The Oneness Of God

    $24.99

A universal question in both the religious and non-religious communities has always been whether or not Jesus is God. Subsequently, the theological question becomes: If He is God, how can this be reconciled or understood with respect to one’s belief in ONE GOD (monotheism)? In plain language, this book uses the Scriptures in a systematic theological approach to expose the Trinitarian error and those of other religions that reject Jesus as being the complete fullness of the Godhead. In this book, “They Still Reject Jesus,” the “Oneness Doctrine” is contrasted to that of a “3 Person God Doctrine.”
