Thus Says The Lord
$31.99This is a comprehensive and astute interpretive study of the prophetic tradition of ancient Israel. Ward interprets the whole of the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve Prophets, placing the religious/theological message of these prophets into its most probable historical context. But he also deals with the socioeconomic world of Israael’s prophets, so that readers are able to confront the message, the ideas, of the prophets in relation to the larger realities through which the people and the prophets were living.

Theology Of The Second Letter To The Corinthians
$71.99The resonances in the dialogue of Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians are difficult to detect unless the reader has some knowledge of the social, religious, and economic situation of the community to which the apostle was writing. In this lucid and clear survey, Father Murphy-O’Connor attempts to provide such background information, which he integrates skillfully into a flowing exposition of Paul’s thought. St. Paul’s theology thus comes to life as the complex interplay of factors that prompted him to write as he did to the Corinthians are examined and explored. In addition to providing a particularly accessible picture of the distinctive theological contribution made by 2 Corinthians, the author’s book prompts new insights into the relation of Christ to the ministry of the Church.

Theology Of The Johannine Epistles
$40.99The Johannine Epistles have long been recognized as contributing a vital element to the theology of the New Testament. Usually it is to the Gospel that the reader turns first in order to explore that contribution; the First Epistle is treated as a supplement, while 2 and 3 John–because of their brevity–receive little attention. This book allows the Epistles to speak for themselves, and shows that they sound a distinctive note within Johannine theology, in particular, and the thought of the New Testament, in general. Dr. Lieu carefully outlines their most important theological themes which, when understood in their original setting, are seen to have rich potential for the continuing theology of the Church.

Abiding Astonishment : Psalms Modernity And The Making Of History
$22.00This examination of the “Psalms of Historical Recital” reviews this portion of Scripture’s social-political intention and function. Focusing on Psalms 78, 105, 106, and 136, Walter Brueggemann considers these psalms on their own terms and then takes up two issues that move in opposite interpretive directions: the Psalms in relation to the historical writing of modernity and the Psalms in relation to the voices of marginality. Brueggemann attempts to enter Israel’s past as that past is experienced, voiced, and advocated in the Psalms both as liberating affirmation and as controlling censure. Contains notes, bibliography and indices. Walter Brueggemann is Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia.

Narration And Discourse In The Book Of Genesis
$120.00This book is a fine example of what can be contributed to theological understanding through a study of narrative. The author contends that the presence of a disembodied Voice in the Book of Genesis has a profound effect upon the style of narration and the way in which the plots of various sub-narratives develop. His approach is distinctive in his use of semiotic theory to show how the style and plots of specific narratives lead to new perceptions and understandings of the mysterious discourse of the divine Voice.

New Testament Theology
$24.99This work is not a history of New Testament times, nor an account of New Testament religion. Nor does it proceed from a view that the New Testament was written as theology. We must bear in mind that the writers of the New Testament books were not writing set theological pieces. They were concerned with the needs of the churches for which they wrote. Those churches already had the Old Testament, but these new writings became in time the most significant part of the Scriptures of the believing community. As such, they should be studied in their own right, and these questions should be asked: What do these writings mean? What is the theology they express or imply? What is of permanent validity in them? We read these writings across a barrier of many centuries and from a standpoint of a very different culture. We make every effort to allow for this, but we never succeed perfectly. In this book I am trying hard to find out what the New Testament authors meant, and this not as an academic exercise, but as the necessary prelude to our understanding of what their writings mean for us today. — From the Introduction.

Community And Gospel In Luke Acts
$58.99Always observing the established techniques of New Testament analysis, especially redaction criticism, Professor Esler makes extensive use of sociology and anthropology to examine the author of Luke-Acts’ theology as a response to social and political pressures on the Christian community for whom he was writing. Various themes such as table-fellowship, the law, the temple, poverty and riches, and politics are examined to determine how they have been influenced by the social and political background of Luke’s audience. This book offers a New Testament paradigm and warrant for those interested in generating a theology attuned to the social and political realities affecting contemporary Christian congregations.

Conflict In Mark
$18.00Applying the literary method, Kingsbury explores the plot of Mark’s Gospel by focusing on the conflict Jesus has with the Jewish authorities on the one hand, and with the disciples, on the other. Thus he pulls together what on the surface appears to be disparate elements in Mark and explains who Mark’s Jesus is and why he died, and what the nature of true discipleship is all about. By discussing the whole of Mark’s plot, Kingsbury enables pastors and students to grasp clearly the content of Mark’s gospel as story. At the same time, his work is also of rele vance for the scholarly discussion of Mark, especially on the question of the nature and purpose of Mark. In short, this is an excellent example of how to read the Gospels as stories about the meaning of the life and ministry of Jesus.

ALL THE DOCTRINES OF THE BIBLEA Study and Analysis of Major Bible Doctrines
All the Doctrines of the Bible is a study and analysis of the major Bible doctrines. Says Professor F. F. Bruce in his foreword, “Dr. Lockyer, out of his long experience and ripe wisdom, has written a book which will help many to understand the cardinal doctrines of the Christian faith. It will not take the place of the Bible, but will prove of greatest use to those who study it along with an open Bible. The Bible is intended to be much more than a handbook of divinity. But with minds like ours we can learn the Bible doctrines more readily as someone systematizes them for us in a logical sequence, and this is what Dr. Lockyer has done in these pages.”

Ecclesiastes And The Song Of Solomon
$33.00Fascinating, surprising, challenging – these are among the words used by Robert Davidson to describe the two books covered in this commentary. He writes that these two books, linked in tradition to Solomon, share “a refreshing honesty and a healthy exploration of the most powerful of human emotions, presented to us in the conviction that all of life, its unanswered questions and its passions, its joys and its frustrations, come to us from God.” The Book of Ecclesiastes concerns the ultimate meaning of life itself and reminds us that we can be happy even amid uncertainty. The Song of Solomon invites us to an exploration of love that reminds us of God’s unending care for the world.
