    • Lectionary Stories For Preaching And Teaching Cycle A

      $31.18

Everyone loves a good story. Storytellers who excel at their craft have the ability to draw readers or listeners into the worlds they create, using characters and situations to entertain and enlighten us. Jesus, the Master Storyteller, often spoke using parables — short stories that conveyed a spiritual truth. By drawing his listeners into his story, he unlocked their minds and hearts to hear the truth he was trying to relate to them.

This compilation of stories for the entire church year taken from StoryShare follows in that same tradition. StoryShare, a part of SermonSuite.com, is written by various authors brought together to meditate on scriptures in the Revised Common Lectionary for Cycle A and create stories that flesh out these passages, allowing readers to see these words in a new way. These stories can be whimsical and light-hearted or poignant and reflective, even tragic. But they all strive to bring us to a deeper understanding of the scriptures and the God who inspired them. Some of the stories are even based on actual events experienced by the authors, events that influenced their perspective on Christianity.

Useful as sermon illustrations, stand alone sermons, teaching aides, personal devotions, or even just for entertaining reading, Stories for Preaching and Teaching will draw you into new worlds with vibrant and engaging images, deepening your relationship with God in the process.

      $37.43

“I am very impressed with the way Dr. Ellingsen outlines this” Lectionary Preaching Workbook… “Here is a splendid workbook. It is rich in detail and theological insight. Ellingsen writes clearly, is sensitive to context, and widens [our] horizons… This book should be required reading for all pastors, seminary students, and other lay people who are involved in ministry with adults and youth. It should be regarded as a textbook to enhance one’s knowledge about the meaning of the seasons or major festivals of the [church] year.”
      Reverend Jesse Averett Jr.
Presiding Elder, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church
“If a preacher is looking for quick and easy sermons, this tool is not what s/he is seeking. But if a preacher is looking for solid biblical scholarship, thoughtful exegesis, a possible preaching theme for each of the appointed lessons for each Sunday in the lectionary year accompanied by a variety of ideas for how that theme might be developed, then CSS’ latest “Lectionary Preaching Workbook” will be a valuable resource. Built around the Revised Common Lectionary and the Christian church year, Pr. Mark Ellingsen has put together a highly useful resource.
Ellingsen’s passion for justice and equality as applied to the social issues of the day comes through clearly in some of his “sermon moves” as well as the socio-economic and political illustrative connections he offers. Incorporating insights and quotations from a variety of sources — everything from modern brain research to Luther, Calvin, Liberation Theology, Bonhoeffer, Pascal, and Barth — Ellingsen strives to connect God’s word to our world in ways that the preacher will find stimulating and inspirational.”

When it comes to preaching from a lectionary, it can often be a daunting task to create new ways of preaching about a passage that has been around for thousands of years. It would seem that, after a while, there would be no new ways of looking at a scripture passage. A different perspective, however, can be most beneficial in finding a new way to help your congregation see each of the readings.

    • Message Was Good Why Werent They Moved

      $18.11

Dear Follower of the Great Commission: I am all too well aware that those who prepare God’s Word for delivery often do so with great anticipation and hope. These well-meaning men and women hear God’s call in the Great Commission. They get motivated and prayerfully act on that call. Sadly, their messages have little or no impact. They are left confused and in doubt of their calling, and their paramount question is, “Why, Lord?” They want to know what happened. They truthfully studied and diligently prepared their message. In other words, they faithfully did their part, but people who heard the delivered word seemed unmoved. This, too, puzzled me. I pondered and studied this for years, and I am fully convinced that God gave me the complete answer; thus, I wrote this book. What are my credentials for doing this? I taught in high school for almost forty years. I have a Master of Education degree and more than thirty graduate hours beyond that. I started debate clubs and have been a coach and advisor, studying the process of delivering speeches. This became my cherished professional hobby. In 1972, at the age of thirty, I invited Jesus into my life and I began a personal relationship with Him. All that training in education and debate, I dedicated to His service. I began to read and study the Bible on a daily basis. Over the years, I became active in church as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, and Sunday school teacher. Here is where I developed a special love for God’s Word. In the last several years, I turned to the study of how best to deliver God’s great, impacting message. There is little doubt that God Himself prepared me for this study, and God’s messengers who would impact the world need to apply the findings of this study. The world today groans under the weight of many crushing problems, but it is not presidents or politicians who have the solutions. The rescue agents are those who fall under the Great Commission, and that’s you! You can effectively lay out God’s solutions if you follow the strategy found in the Scriptures, and you can do this with powerful influence that can change the world. A dear evangelical preacher of more than thirty years, who pastors a church on the New York – Pennsylvania border, read this book and made the following comment: “I would highly recommend this book as required reading for every minister and ministerial student. It is one of the most practical cries for and description of ‘anointed preaching’ that I have r

      $32.00

This Study Guide provides an introduction to the practice of preaching. It is designed for people from various church traditions, in the early stages of ministerial formation.Preaching is a complex and challenging business requiring a demanding mixture of skills. People listening to a sermon have the right to expect that a person who stands up to preach, can interpret the Bible competently, has a grasp of core Christian beliefs, and believes what they preach. They also expect someone who has the necessary range of communication skills to put the message across in an accessible way. Such a range of expectations presents daunting challenges to the most experienced preacher. The book includes practical exercises which could be used by individuals or by groups. The book is suitable for introductory courses in preaching or for modules which consider preaching within an overall focus upon leading public worship.

    • Homiletical Beat : Why All Sermons Are Narrative

      $18.99

Promoting the idea of sermon as narrative, Eugene Lowry’s first book, The Homiletical Plot, became one of the most influential preaching books of the latter part of the 20th century. While the sermon as narrative has become conventional preaching wisdom, it is largely misunderstood. Sermons are, by definition, narratives and as such, they have plots. At the same time, the sermon is not a story. While similar in many ways, narratives and stories are distinct. Therefore, to think of narrative preaching as merely one of many homiletical styles is to misunderstand and reduce the nature of the sermon. The sermon is more than just an option for the preacher; rather, it is, by definition, a narrative because it happens in time, not in space. This changes everything because the sermon ceases to be something a preacher constructs, like a thesis or even a painting. Instead, it is more like a piece of music – something a preacher plays within intuitively, to a constant beat – time after time, week after week. In light of this revelation, what are new strategic aims for sermon preparation and delivery?

      $30.00

This latest collection of sermons by Eric James is also the best, drawing as it does on a lifetime of experience, a deep personal faith, and a love of people, music, literature and the richness of life. It also has a valedictory quality, since during the period covered by the collection the charity Christian Action, of which Eric James had been director, closed down after fifty years, and he resigned from being Preacher to Gray’s Inn, an office which he had held for nineteen years. Here too is a farewell to an era, with ‘In memoriam’ sermons on a number of distinguished figures who embodied that era, and constant references to a world which is passing away.aHowever, that is only part of the story. In Season, Out of Season is dedicated to an ordinand preparing to preach to the next generation, and like Eric James’s favourite collect, ‘0 God, who hast prepared for them that love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding…’, it is full of hope for the future.

    • 6 Deadly Sins Of Preaching

      $17.99

This ethics of preaching text identifies vices of irresponsible preaching practices. Preachers who fail to develop deep respect for their listeners or drift into a lack faithfulness to the Gospel can end up becoming:

      * The Pretender (The Problem of In-authenticity)
      * The Egoist (The Problem of Self-absorption)
      * The Manipulator (The Problem of Greediness)
      * The Panderer (The Problem of Trendiness)
      * The Crusader (The Problem of Exploitation)
      * The Demagogue (The Problem of Self-righteousness)

Just as the church historically derived its Seven Holy Virtues (chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, & humility) by naming Seven Deadly Sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, & pride), Reid and Hogan call preachers to turn away from pulpit vices and strive to realize the homiletic virtues of becoming:

      * Authentic (The Call to Be Genuine)
      * Altruistic (The Call to Be Selfless)
      * Careful (The Call to Exercise Self-Control)
      * Passionate (The Call to Be Honest to God)
      * Courteous (The Call to Woo a Reasoned Reception)
      * A ‘Namer’ of God (The Call to Reveal an Ineffable God)

The Six Deadly Sins of Preaching explores the difference between the irresponsible practices, unfortunate missteps, and mere unthinking mistakes in preaching. A chapter is devoted to Preaching Missteps (problems that do not rise to the level of being irresponsible) that includes:

      * Short Changing the Process
      * Waving a Red Flag
      * Thou Shall Not Bore the Congregation
      * Through the Looking Glass Darkly
      * The Mumbler

When you stand before your congregation, what do you hope to accomplish when you preach the Word? If people have Bibles and the freedom to read and pray on their own—why do they need you? In short, what do you bring to the table? Author, pastor, and professor John Koessler answers those questions and many more. Why does one sermon have a powerful effect on the audience while another falls flat? Why should listeners heed what the preacher says? Is human language adequate for facilitating an encounter with God? What is the point of preaching a sermon? Folly, Grace, and Power is a must-read for pastors, seminarians, and lay leaders charged with the task of preaching God’s word. Distinguished Old Testament scholar Walter Kaiser believes that the Old Testament is sorely neglected today in teaching and preaching, but it is even more neglected when it comes to setting forth the hope that Christians have for the future. Firmly believing that the Old Testament offers important insights into biblical eschatology and the Christian life, he provides guidance for expositing fifteen key Old Testament eschatological passages to preachers, teachers, and Bible students. Each chapter focuses on a single biblical text. Kaiser introduces the topic, examines the issues, notes who has contributed to some of the solutions, and shows how this sets up the text to be exegeted and prepared for exposition.

The team of Navigating the Sermon looks for overall topics for the entire Cycle B church year that hold the readings together. For more than forty years, pastor R. Kent Hughes has shared the gospel with thousands of people and raised the standard of expository preaching in North America and beyond.

Packer, Wayne Grudem, John MacArthur, Peter Jensen, and D. A. Carson, examine what it means to be an expository preacher. Among the contributors are professors, a university chaplain, a college president, and urban church planters-living testimonies to Hughes’s wide influence.

These contributors address an array of themes for the ministry-minded, such as interpretive principles and practices, biblical and historical paradigms, expository preaching’s contemporary aims and challenges, and the priority of training-all in the expectation that this one man’s passion to preach the Word faithfully will enhance the understanding and practice of expository preaching in churches and seminaries around the world.

Most preaching and teaching in the church engages only one of the senses-hearing. In The Power of Multisensory Preaching and Teaching, Rick Blackwood shows how recognizing and engaging the multiple senses of the congregation can lead to greater impact.

Blackwood presents both biblical evidence and scientific research showing that the more senses we stimulate in teaching and preaching, the greater the levels of learner attention, comprehension, and retention. Blackwood addresses both the “why” and the “how” of multisensory communication. Regardless of one’s current skill level, this practical book can help anyone add multi-sensory elements to messages in order to take communication to the next level-more compelling, clear, and memorable. As a result of reading this book readers can be more effective as a communicator and teacher. The book includes tools, examples, and worksheets.

    • Preaching Character : Reclaiming Wisdoms Paradigmatic Imagination For Trans

      $38.30

In this final installment from the long-running and celebrated Conference on Preaching book series, an energetic group of scholars join together across ethnic and theological divides to consider one lasting question: ”What is a life well-lived in the world that Wisdom fashions?”

For over a decade, the Conference on Preaching has generated conversation among evangelicals, postliberals, and mainline Protestants by bringing together well-known biblical scholars and homileticians across the theological spectrum. In Preaching Character, editors Dave Bland and David Fleer turn to the papers from the October 2009 conference on preaching and wisdom.

Wisdom is fundamentally about the formation and transformation of character, they write. When God created the world, God breathed wisdom into its essence; the world operates by wisdom. Thus wisdom is essential to living responsibly in this world. It is by wisdom that God empowers humans to negotiate the complexities of life. And it is by wisdom that we deepen our relationship with God and with others.

Believing that the task of preaching biblical wisdom is about shaping the character of the faith community and its individual members, the contributors to this book seek to echo wisdom’s call to embark on a fascinating and often unpredictable adventure. Intrigue, disappointment, joy, suffering, conflict, dialogue, and satisfaction fill the journey. Wisdom offers no guarantees along the way regarding rewards or financial security or physical well-being. But the journey with wisdom does guarantee the kind of character that enables individuals to live responsibly in community, reflecting the very nature of the God they serve.

    • Preaching In An Age Of Globalization

      $34.00

There are many books on the market that address how culture, race, gender, or economic status affect the way preachers preach and congregations hear sermons. This is the first book to address preaching that promotes solidarity across these differences.
Preaching needs to be targeted to specific contexts. But how can a preacher handle specific contexts when we live in a globalized world? What does local context mean and who defines it? Kim develops the concept of “trans-contextual preaching” to show how preachers can respect diversity and global connections. She develops a new theology of preaching, examines the modes of biblical interpretation appropriate for trans-contextual preaching, and explores designs for sermons. Sample sermons from the author provide excellent illustrations.

    • Biblical Preaching And Teaching 2

      $32.48

One objective of this book is to set forth an interest in the significance of the Book of Psalms in the lives of God’s people. Fifteen psalms were chosen in order to address the “then” as well as the “now.” In this study, the Egyptian Hallel Psalms (113-118) are included since Jesus and His disciples sang these psalms during the Passover Meal. Psalm 114 (Chapters 4 and 5) explores the philosophy of atheism versus biblical theism. Four chapters (16-19) are devoted to the Book of Revelation. These chapters deal with foundational studies, which in-depth studies are essential to a correct interpretation of this book. For instance: (1) the date of the Book of Revelation, (2) the identity and character of the beast, (3) a new heaven and a new earth, and (4) the last days. Finally, the last four chapters focus upon two abused texts. Chapters 20-22 study the Greek text of Hebrews 13:17 in order to pinpoint more clearly the meaning of the author. The final chapter examines the phrase “if we deliberately keep on sinning.”

    • Novel Preaching : Tips From Top Writers On Crafting Creative Sermons

      $28.00

Fiction writers are highly creative people who have learned the discipline of translating their ideas into effective communication. That same combination of creativity and skill comes into play for preachers crafting their sermons.
In this lively and accessible book, Alyce McKenzie explores how fiction writers approach the task of writing novels: how they develop ideas, find their inspiration, and turn the spark of a creative notion into words on paper that will captivate the masses. McKenzie shows how preachers can use the same techniques to enhance their own creativity and to turn their ideas into powerful, well-crafted sermons.

Novel Preaching offers a wealth of advice from successful fiction writers, including Isabelle Allende, Frederick Buechner, Julia Cameron, Annie Dillard, Natalie Goldberg, Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, and Melanie Rae Thon, and also includes sample sermons from McKenzie.

    • Finding Language And Imagery

      $30.00

Sermons use words. And though it appears obvious that preachers should be careful and exacting in word choice, novice preachers often set aside this aspect of preaching in favor of exegetical work and sermonic focus. Nonetheless preachers subscribe to preaching aids, peruse preaching websites, and purchase annuals of sermon illustrations in order to adorn their sermons with apt imagery. Preachers look for others’ words to amplify their own. The weekly work with language is daunting: Preachers must be disciplined to find fresh phrases for sermons and to make good choices about their own words and those borrowed from others as language shapes faith. This volume introduces the power of language to determine reality, the intricacies of language issues for preaching, and the custodial task of preachers for this work.

    • We Speak Because We Have First Been Spoken

      $21.99

Many books on preaching focus solely on crafting sermons, dealing with parishioners, and other external concerns. We Speak Because We Have First Been Spoken focuses instead on the person and formation of the preacher, describing the kind of Christian wisdom and character that are required to hear and speak the Word of God.

Michael Pasquarello here offers a holistic vision of the person and work of the preacher. He emphasizes the kind of person one must become in order to be faithful to the Word of God incarnate in Christ and mediated by the witness of Scripture. To that end, he highlights the wisdom, virtue, judgment, and discernment ministry requires.

While this is not a new subject, it has until recently been considered relatively unimportant, a significant contrast to the views of the patristic and medieval periods in which the holiness of the preacher was of primary concern. Matters of skill, technique, and style were secondary to the spiritual and moral formation of the person who preaches. In other words, what we preach and how we preach should be inseparable. Pasquarello argues for a return to the Augustinian mindset – that the pastor must become, through faith, hope, and love, a “living sermon.”

    • Spirit Speech : Celebration And Lament In Preaching

      $22.99

That the Holy Spirit is present in preaching is something we take for granted. How the Spirit is present is a question we seldom ask. Luke Powery suggests that we fail to ask that question to the detriment of our preaching. Drawing on the tradition of African American preaching, he locates the Spirit’s activity in the sermon in two primary places; First, in celebration, the joyous acceptance of God’s gifts to the church and to the world. But equally as powerful is the expression of lament, the lifting up of our sorrow, grief, and suffering. In these two experiences the Spirit plays the decisive role, enabling the preacher to lay the congregation’s joys and sorrows at the feet of the living God, and announcing God’s presence in both our celebration and our lament.

    • Serving The Word

      $30.00

This book invites the reader to see how God’s word can become the crux not only of the sermon but of the worship service as a whole. Over the past half-century, worship scholars have found a substantial ecumenical worship pattern in Luke’s story of Jesus’ post-resurrection appearance on the road and at the table in Emmaus. In that word-and-meal structure, the relationship between preaching and worship as distinct aspects of liturgical experience breaks down. The preached word, then, and the liturgical event within which preaching is located become integral to each other. This book invites the reader to explore how-through God’s word-preaching informs and is, in turn, supported by the worship event as a whole.

      $22.43

I write for all those parish pastors and priests who want to preach well, who long to speak with authority, clarity, and humility, and yet who feel, as I do, that there is simply never enough time in the week to do justice to the task. I write for those who feel at times overwhelmed by the responsibilities of our work, who wonder if it is possible, in parish ministry, to live a balancedlife. I write from that same place of struggle myself.
      — from the Foreword

For many pastors and congregations, the pulpit is the focal point of weekly worship. But preaching is not only a spiritual practice, it’s also a practice of leadership — the most effective means for most ministers of inspiring and guiding their flocks as well as engaging with the society in which they live. Gathering Up the Fragments was written for pastors who struggle with the weight of this heavy responsibility, endeavoring to preach relevant sermons that stay true to theword of God.
