The author reviews much counseling literature that involves the use of metaphor to understand and influence counselees, and considers numerous examples in Scripture of indirect, metaphoric communication. Insights gained from both Scripture and counseling literature are incorporated into an approach appropriate for use in contemporary Christian counseling. Several basic principles emerge that facilitate the formulation and delivery of metaphoric stories that are empathic, engaging, earthy, efficient, and enigmatic. Examples are presented along with suggestions to help the reader develop therapeutic stories from his or her own experience. Attention is also given to the use of metaphoric activities that may augment the counseling process. Practical concerns are addressed, including timing and frequency of stories and activities, interpretation, and seeding. The hope of the author is to challenge Christian counselors to access the powerful potential of effectively using metaphoric stories and activities to increase positive outcomes. The book is designed to serve as a supplemental text in a variety of Christian counseling courses at all levels.
