Control Girl : Lessons On Surrendering Your Burden Of Control From Seven Wo
$16.99Add to cart“I control because I care.”
“I just want to be sure of a happy ending.”
“I worry that everything is spinning out of control.”Many women can identify with statements like these. They have a compulsion to make everything turn out just right and are willing to do anything to make it happen. But this unbalanced pursuit of control makes those around them anxious and defensive. And when they realize control is slipping from their grasp, they lose control of themselves and react in anger or fear.
Shannon Popkin knows this struggle inside and out. Keeping her inner Control Girl hidden is a full-time job. Thankfully, she also knows another very important truth: no woman has to be a Control Girl.
In this encouraging book, Shannon invites seven Control Girls from the Bible into the conversation. She examines each story for the moments in which grasping for control circumvented God’s plans for good, whether it was Eve’s desire to know instead of to trust, Sarah’s inability to wait for God to move, or Rebekah’s controlling hand on her family’s future. Finally, Shannon finds God’s perspective on each of the problems and then reveals how readers’ can have their own happy endings in similar situations.
The author shares from her own struggles and follows each Bible study with questions for personal reflection. In the end, controlling women will find insight into their own experience, peace in the knowledge that God is in control, and relief that they are free.

Real Mary : Why Protestant Christians Can Embrace The Mother Of Jesus
$17.99Add to cartWould you like to meet the real Mary of Nazareth? The real Mary was an unmarried, pregnant teenage girl in first-century Palestine. She was a woman of courage, humility, spirit and resolve, and her response to the angel Gabriel shifted the tectonic plates of history.
Popular biblical scholar Scot McKnight explores the contours of Mary’s life from the moment she learned of God’s plan for the Messiah to the culmination of Christ’s ministry on earth. Dismantling the myths and challenging our prejudices, the author introduces us to a woman who is a model for faith and who points us to her son. -
Paul Behaving Badly
$22.99Add to cartThe apostle Paul was kind of a jerk. He was arrogant and stubborn. He called his opponents derogatory, racist names. He legitimized slavery and silenced women. He was a moralistic, homophobic killjoy who imposed his narrow religious views on others. Or was he? Randolph Richards and Brandon O’Brien explore the complicated persona and teachings of the apostle Paul. Unpacking his personal history and cultural context, they show how Paul both offended Roman perspectives and scandalized Jewish sensibilities. His vision of Christian faith was deeply disturbing to others in his day and remains so in ours. Paul behaved badly, but not just in the ways we might think. Take another look at Paul and see why this “worst of sinners” dares to say, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”

Jael, the tent-peg-toting warrior princess. Herodias, the horrible beheader. Tamar, the widow and not-so-timid temptress. Athaliah, the deadly daughter of Jezebel. Did the Protestant Reformers understand Paul correctly? Has the church today been unduly influenced by Reformation-era misreadings of the Pauline epistles? These questions-especially as they pertain to Martin Luther’s interpretation of the Pauline doctrine of justification-have been at the forefront of much discussion within biblical studies and theology in light of the New Perspective on Paul. But that leads to another question: Have we understood the Reformers correctly? With that in mind, these essays seek to enable a more careful reading of the Reformers’ exegesis of Pauline texts. Each chapter pairs a Reformer with a Pauline letter and then brings together a historical theologian and a biblical scholar to examine these Reformation-era readings of Paul. In doing so, this volume seeks a better understanding of the Reformers and the true meaning of the biblical text.

Chorus Of Prophetic Voices
$40.00Add to cartWhile there are many textbooks about the prophetic literature, most have taken either a historical or literary approach to studying the prophets. A Chorus of Prophetic Voices, by contrast, draws on both historical and literary approaches by paying careful attention to the prophets as narrative characters. It considers each unique prophetic voice in the canon, in its fully developed literary form, while also listening to what these voices say together about a particular experience in Israel’s story. It presents these four scrolls-Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Book of the Twelve-as works produced in the aftermath of destruction, works that employ prophetic characters, and as the words uttered during the crises. The prophetic literature became for Israel, living in a context of dispersion and imperial domination, a portable and adaptable resource at once both challenging and comforting. This book provides the fullest picture available for introducing students to the prophetic literature by valuing the role of the original prophetic characters, the finished state of the books that bear their names, the separate historical crises in the life of Israel they address, and the “chorus of prophetic voices” one hears when reading them as part of a coherent literary corpus.

Moses A Work In Progress

This is an attempt to fill in details of an ancient story, so that it may be possible for the reader to visualize the life and development of one of our biblical heroes. Many times we think that perhaps God will just send us a “burning bush” experience and we will be ready to charge off into history doing great things for God. Yes, Moses had a burning bush experience and a spoken direction from God. And yes, he then led 2 million people out of slavery into freedom. But Moses was eighty years in training. It was not until he crossed the Red Sea that Moses began to live through a period of time that would afford his maximum learning experiences.

12 Unlikely Heroes
$19.99Add to cartJohn MacArthur reveals how God worked through ordinary people in some unexpected ways.
Far from the children’s tales depicted in picture books and nursery rhymes, the men and women highlighted in the Bible were unnervingly real. They faltered. They struggled. And at times they fell short. Yet God worked through them in surprising and incredible ways to accomplish His purposes. Scripture does not hide their weaknesses, caricature their strengths, or spin their stories as a display of human nobility. Instead, it describes these heroes of the faith with unflinching honesty and delivers an unexpected ending: “God is not ashamed to be called their God” (Hebrews 11:16).
In Twelve Unlikely Heroes, pastor and best-selling author John MacArthur uses his deep knowledge of the Bible and history to take us back to see these three-dimensional men and women in their own times and cultures. In doing so, it becomes clear how their dramatic stories apply to us today. People who might at first seem foreign quickly become familiar and unforgettable, particularly as they reveal the true Hero behind every witness, the power counterbalancing every weakness, “the Author and Finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1).

Dynamic Women Of The Bible
$22.00Add to cartThough we often focus more on the male heroes and villains in the Bible, the pages of Scripture are brimming with women who are edgy, strong willed, and controversial. Far from the stereotype of sweet and submissive, many women of the Bible steal the show despite being cast in the supporting roles. What parts did these women have in the vast family of God? What challenges did they face that we face even today? And what can we learn from them if we allow them to be the three-dimensional people they really were?
In Dynamic Women of the Bible, the lives of more than fifty biblical women are summoned from their graves to live again by the author who brought you The Biographical Bible. Scripture references, biographical profiles, sidebars (featuring twenty additional women of the Bible), discussion questions, and life applications make this book perfect for small groups, Bible studies, book clubs, and personal reading.

Come Away With Me
$15.49Add to cart“The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach” (Revelation 12:14).
“After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18).
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left” (Matthew 24:34-41).
This book is not about prophecy, though we discuss a lot of it. This book is about a love affair with the true God of the Universe. All of our human relationships were designed by God to show us how to share love with Him in worship.
Jesus is going to return soon to pick up His bride. The time is short. We are already supposed to be ready for Him. If you can feel that in your heart, then you are ready for this book. We will explore the Bible record of rescue for those who please the Almighty, and we will examine the prophetic implications for our times. Lord Jesus Christ, we are ready, we are willing, and we want to go with You!

God Is Always At Work Even When You Do Not Know It
$12.49Add to cartGod is always at work! He moves in ways we do not comprehend. In the ancient Biblical story of Esther a most intriguing and fascinating narrative unfolds. A Jewish queen in a Persian empire and a wicked Persian king set the stage for one of the most challenging stories in ancient literature.
The theme of this historical book usually surrounds Esther but the more this writer investigates the book there is a greater purpose. God is always at work even when we do not know it. God’s name is not mentioned in the book. Yet His presence and leadership is all through the book. When you and I face difficult challenges in life we may sense that God is not working and perhaps we wonder if he even cares. The story of Esther is one of the most comforting of Biblical books as the reader begins to sense the unique work of God. God not only cares but he is orchestrating events behind the scene. I pray that on finishing this volume readers will love and admire the God of Scripture in a new way.
Often studies on Esther major on the characters. From the arrogant king to the magnificent queen there is intrigue and mystery. One person is unnamed. He is orchestrating the entire episode. He is the Almighty God.

God Speaks We Listen
$14.49Add to cartMost people spend lots of time praying, meditating and talking with God. Do we ever think about listening? Do we listen to God when he speaks to us? Nobody tells us how to do it. Listening takes practice but talking comes easy. We like the way our voice sounds, even when we pray. If we stop talking and start listening, God will speak to us. Just think about Samuel and Moses and Noah. Their lives changed dramatically when they listened to God. We should meet God on a regular basis, not only to talk with him but also to listen. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10). Being still is a key to listening. Being quiet is another. Both takes practice. Our busy lifestyle seems to hurry us along so fast we never have time to be still and be quiet. Many men in biblical times had this same problem, but when they learned to listen, God made amazing changes in their lives.
God Speaks We Listen visits some of these men. They can teach us how to listen. God still speaks to us today, if we will only listen.

Woman Standing In The Midst
$15.49Add to cartWith the dawn of each new day comes the search for renewed strength as countless women choose to stand in the midst. Wrestling with a flood of thoughts and emotions are all part of their daily routine in their endeavor to overcome and prevail. Like Pharaoh’s daughter, they may not know the potential or purpose of the one for whom they must stand. Yet through courage and a strange sense of purpose they embrace whatever risks comes with their choice. Our world today is filled with the results and blessings of the fruits of their labor, which often costs them all. The many lives, families, marriages, homes and ministries that continue to thrive around us can be attributed to their sacrifice and selfless struggle. Many stood because they were left to, others stand because they have to but there are those whom the Lord have called to stand as examples and a source of strength to others in the midst. Their heroism must be complemented with a change of attitude and perception, resulting in a cultural transformation in the Body of Christ the Church. For ” There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus”.

The Story Of Ruth
Who Wrote This Book?
When Was Ruth’s Book Written?
Why It Is Where It IsAdditional Info
The days were filled with turmoil on every front. Yet in the midst of it was a virtuous man whose life and character was undaunted by the times. And then there was the young widowed woman who had just returned to town with her mother-in-law. She was different for sure, but there was something intangible and much more distinct about her. Maybe it was because she was new in her faith. Maybe it was her hard working habits, or her submissive spirit, or the major impact she had made upon the residents of the community, or maybe it was the way she went quietly about her business. Whatever it was, she was being prepared for a divine intersection with the man who had also been prepared. Little did either one of them know what God had prepared them to receive, and to do for His glory. He really does have prepared places for prepared people. Is this about Ruth and Boaz? Or, is it about someone you know. After all, the way God works in the lives of His people is eternal. Look inside and see how He did it for them, and how He will do it for you.

$15.99Add to cartGente Comun. Maybe you heard their names in a childhood Sunday school class. They’re not often the champions or the go-to sermon illustrations. Just like you and me, these ordinary people stumbled and struggled. They faced their own sin and came face to face with a God who not only wipes it away, but also makes the common extraordinary. They discovered that an encounter with the living God changes everything.
Dive into the lives of more than twenty of the Bible’s most compelling characters through inspirational selections from the writings of bestselling author Max Lucado. An ideal companion volume to Gente Comun. This book features a whole new cast and the encouragement from their stories.

As the Roman-appointed high priest who had a hand in orchestrating Jesus’ crucifixion, Caiaphas secured his place in infamy alongside Pontius Pilate. But who was Caiaphas really?Adele Reinhartz offers a thorough reconsideration of Caiaphas in the Gospels and other ancient texts as well as in subsequent visual arts, literature, film, and drama. The portrait that emerges challenges long-held beliefs about this New Testament figure by examining the background of the high priesthood and exploring the relationships among the high priest, the Roman leadership, and the Jewish population. Reinhartz does not seek to exonerate Caiaphas from culpability in the crucifixion, but she does expand our understanding of Caiaphas’s complex religious and political roles in biblical literature and his culturally loaded depiction in ongoing Jewish-Christian dialogue.

Gods Champion : The Life Of Job
$17.95Add to cartJob, God’s champion, offers experiential insight into the nature and workings of God. Job is not the main character of the book of Job; rather, it is God. The opening scene is in heaven, and God’s relationship with humanity is challenged. Job’s life becomes the arena of contention in this attack on God. As a result, Job loses family, wealth, and health. Job and his friends argue over God’s actions and men’s experiences in the world. God clarifies that Job spoke what was right about Him.
Here are a few important lessons from Job’s life:
* God wants a relationship with you.
* We need a mediator for our spiritual condition.
* God operates for His own glory.
* Suffering may be a part of God’s plan.Don’t let the suffering temper your enthusiasm for the understanding offered by God’s champion. Job’s life illustrates a substantive spiritual relationship with the God of heaven. The more we know Him, the more we will value the relationship. Our relationship with Him facilitates our being made in His image. Learn to be a champion!

Who was Peter and what was his true stature in the early church? For Protestants at least, Peter seems caught between two caricatures: the rustic fisherman of Galilee and the author of two lesser New Testament letters. And in both cases he is overshadowed by Paul. Yet Peter plays a significant role in the Gospels and is an apostolic leader in Acts. And those who study his letters find them filled with theological insight. In The Life and Witness of Peter Larry Helyer seeks to reinstate this neglected and underestimated apostle to his rightful stature as an early Christian leader and faithful witness to Christ. Arguing for a more confident assessment of the apostle’s presence and contribution to the New Testament, Helyer pulls Peter out from the long shadow of Paul. What we find is a Peter whose firsthand witness stands behind much of Mark’s Gospel, a Peter whose striking portrait in Acts can be trusted as reliable, and a Peter whose letters glow with spiritual and theological intelligence. Along the way we are rewarded with a careful analysis of prominent theological themes in Peter’s letters. And we learn much about the traditions, legends and legacy of Peter in the post-apostolic era. -
Fearless Daughters Of The Bible (Reprinted)
$15.00Add to cartChristian women are often led to believe they are God’s afterthoughts–as if they were created inferior to men or destined by God to play a secondary role in life. Not so, says bestselling author J. Lee Grady, father of four daughters and a leading international voice confronting the abuse of women. He counters that the Bible’s message is neither sexist nor patronizing.
Through sharing the lives of mold-breaking biblical women, Grady shows how God enables his daughters to do amazing, even impossible things. He also reveals the empowering, yet often-overlooked, gifts God longs to give each of his daughters–gifts like wisdom, fruitfulness, leadership, family, and boldness. When women learn to receive each of these, and more, as a divine inheritance, they will live the fearless and beautiful lives of purpose God desires for them.

Paul
$35.00Add to cartLucas Grollenberg, a Dutch Dominican, is already known to English readers as the author of one of the best illustrated atlases of the Bible. In this short book he provides one of the most engaging and non-technical introductions to the often difficult thought and work of St Paul. The book arose out of a series of meetings with a group of lay people. Its style is informal and there are no disconcerting details to clpe with which presuppose a certain level of knowledge. At the same time, however, the book reflects the best modern critical scholarship and does not gloss over the diffi- culties which Paul presents to twentieth-century readers. Fr Grollenberg draws on three sources for his account: the letters of Paul, Acts, and the knowledge that has come down to us from the ancient world. To this he can add his own first-hand knowledge of the territories involved, gained not least from travels in an old Volkswagen over the routes covered by Paul. The result is a vivid and even controversial picture of the apostle. Was Paul married? ‘No doubt about it’, says the author, and to those who might raise their eyebrows gives utterly convincing reasons for such judgment. Perhaps his activities led in due course to a marital separation. If only we had her story. . . .
