Mind Monsters : Conquering Fear Worry Guilt And Other Negative Thoughts Tha
$15.99Add to cartIt’s impossible to live a positive life with a negative mind. If you want your life experience to be positive, abundant, joyful, and overflowing with peace, you must recognize mind monsters for what they are and learn how to overcome them.
Before God created the universe, it was just a thought in His mind. His thoughts became His words, and by His words He spoke the world into existence. In the same way, what we think influences what we say, and what we say ultimately determines the type of world we create for ourselves.
Our thoughts are the pathway to our future. But many of us are living beneath our potential because we’ve allowed “mind monsters” to steal our joy and peace, disrupt our relationships, and rob us of contentment. In Mind Monsters, author Kevin Gerald shows us how to combat these negative invaders of the mind and live a victorious life in Christ.
Using the acronym F.A.I.T.H., Gerald explains how we can exterminate mind monsters such as fear, worry, guilt, and shame: Focus on the positive, Affirm yourself in the Lord, Imagine God doing something good in the situation, Trust Him in all things, and never give up Hope. Thoughts are like trains. They take us somewhere. People often end up in places don’t want to be because they boarded the wrong train of thought. Mind Monsters will show readers how to recognize, reject, and replace mind monsters, and retrain their thoughts so they can experience God’s best.

The wide variety of psychotherapies that psychologists and students of psychology face can make for a confusing picture. The level of complexity is multiplied for Christians since they must ask how a particular psychotherapy fits (or doesn’t fit) with a Christian understanding of persons and their suffering. In this expanded and thoroughly update edition, Stanton Jones and Richard Butman continue to offer a careful analysis and penetrating critiques of the myriad of psychotherapies now current in the field of psychology including:Classical Psychoanalysis
Contemporary Psychodynamic Psychotherapies
Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Therapy
Person-Centered Therapy
Experiential Therapies
Family Systems Theory and Therapy
Two valuable new chapters have been added: “Community Psychology and Preventative Intervention Strategies” and “Christian Psychotherapy and the Person of the Christian Psychotherapist.” Opening and closing chapters discuss foundational concerns on the integration of psychology and theology and present the authors’ call for a “responsible eclecticism.” Modern Psychotherapies remains an indispensable resource. -

The tensions often cited between psychology and Christianity are well known. Much worthwhile work has been done to construct theories and frameworks for integrating the two. But how do Christians in psychology actually weave together these strands of their lives and their work. What are their stories? Here Glendon Moriarty brings together twelve of the foremost clinicians and academics in the field of Christian integration to share their stories. Coming from different perspectives and experiences, reflecting gender and ethnic diversity, these prominent psychologists tell about their spiritual, personal and professional journeys of interrelating their faith and profession. In this book we hear about the developmental issues, the sense of calling and the early career insights that shaped their paths. They recount the importance that significant relationships had on their understanding of Christian integration, especially noting the influence of mentors. Struggles and doubts are common human experiences, and the contributors openly share the stresses they encountered to encourage others with similar issues. On a day-to-day basis, we see how spiritual disciplines and the Christian community assist them in their work and in their understanding. Finally, each writer offers a personal note with lessons learned and hard-won wisdom gained. Randall Sorenson once said, “The integration of psychology and Christianity is caught, not taught.” In these stories is a unique opportunity to catch sight of twelve who have already traveled that challenging path. -

Religion and science have often been at odds. In particular, Christianity and psychology have not always gotten along. Some Christians are still suspicious of psychological findings. But researcher Everett Worthington argues that Christians can know people better–and even know God better–through psychological science. Worthington suggests that the relationship between psychological science and Christianity is less like a war or mere dialogue and more like an emerging marriage. In this relational model of psychology and Christianity, there may be marital spats at times but also great potential for an intimate, mutually fulfilling relationship. Worthington demonstrates how the tools of experimental psychology shed light on human nature and the nature of God. Because people bear the image of God, the findings of psychological science help us understand both people and God more clearly. Psychological science provides new perspectives on theology and can help us address theological controversies and hot topics. Worthington gives recent examples of illuminating psychological findings, examines the distortions of the image of God through the effects of sin and points to ways that psychology assists Christians in living more virtuously. Psychology can contribute to the Christian life, because all of us, psychologists and non-psychologists alike, are human and can benefit from better understanding our fellow humankind. Beyond integrating Christian and psychological truths, this book uncovers new relationships between science and religion, demonstrates psychologys benefits to theology, and helps Christians live a redeemed life that is pleasing to God. -

How are Christians to understand and undertake the discipline of psychology? This question has been of keen interest (and sometimes concern) to Christians because of the importance we place on a correct understanding of human nature. Psychology can sometimes seem disconnected from, if not antithetical to, Christian perspectives on life. How are we to understand our Christian beliefs about persons in relation to secular psychological beliefs? This book presents four models for understanding the relationship between psychology and Christianity. David Powlison (Westminster Theological Seminary) offers the biblical counseling model. The levels-of-explanation model is advanced by David G. Myers (Hope College), while Stanton L. Jones (Wheaton College) introduces the integration model. The Christian psychology model is put forth by Robert C. Roberts (Baylor University). Each of the contributors responds to the other essayists, noting points of agreement as well as problems they see. This second edition includes an entirely new chapter by Stanton L. Jones presenting the integration model, along with new responses from the other contributors. It also includes a revised introduction by Eric L. Johnson, describing the history of Christians and psychology, as well as a conclusion that considers what might unite the four views and how a reader might evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each view. Psychology and Christianity: Four Views has become a standard introductory textbook for students and professors of Christian psychology. This revision promises to keep it so. -
Seeing The Unseen
$12.49Add to cartAbandoning at age 30 what promised to be a lucrative law practice, John Collins escaped to Spain for a three-year sabbatical to search for the meaning of life. In SEEING THE UNSEEN: Opening the Closed Circuit of Everyday Consciousness, he relates his findings in maxims and identifi es seven impediments that commonly hinder our capacity to render our everyday experience of people, places and things intelligible, meaningful and joyful. Collins believes the greatest obstacle to realizing personal fulfi llment, or salvation or the Kingdom
of God is psychological. Living our lives almost entirely on the conscious surface of Self, we neglect the unconscious core of our being, resulting in the inability of the whole Self to truly see and know reality. Collins suggests that religion’s fi nest hour may come when it assumes responsibility for healing this rupture in our innermost being, allowing us to achieve greater understanding of ourselves, of the world and ultimately, of God. -

Peaceable Psychology
$32.00Add to cartIn the past century psychology has been practiced in the manner of medical science, working from the assumption that therapy can transcend particular ethnic and religious traditions. Seeking to move the conversation forward, this book argues for a theologically, culturally, and politically sensitive psychotherapy whereby the Christian psychologist treats the patient according to the particulars of the patient’s political situation and ethnic and religious tradition while acknowledging the role of his or her own Christian story in therapeutic dialogue. The authors point to the life of Jesus as the foundation on which to build a therapeutic ethic, appropriating the story of his life to bring healing.

Living God And Our Living Psyche
$18.99Add to cart“Are Jung’s views compatible with Christian faith? Will evangelical Christians be led astray if they rely on Jung as a psychological guide? What would it look like to place Jung’s psychological ideas into an authentically Christian framework? Ulanov tackles some of the most vexing theological and spiritual issues raised by Jung’s approach to psychological healing. Challenging Jung when he diverges from core Christian beliefs, Ulanov nevertheless builds on key Jungian concepts to show how depth psychology can enrich and enliven our life of faith. In the introduction, Dueck (with Brian Becker) interprets Jung’s corpus as “a pastoral attempt to counter the corrosive effects of modernity.’ In his conclusion, he contextualizes Ulanov’s lectures for the evangelical community. The book is a finely-nuanced discussion, glittering with gems of insight. Anyone who has struggled to understand Jung, any psychotherapist longing to include spiritual issues in the work of healing, indeed, any person of prayer seeking to relate authentically to God over the long haul, will relish this book.” – Deborah van Deusen Hunsinger Princeton Theological Seminary

Emotional Processing : Healing Through Feeling
$11.99Add to cartA new way of handling emotional pain and hurts. Based on groundbreaking psychological research. ‘It’s as if the body has a second immune system, an emotional system, devoted not to physical protection, but to protection from emotional hurt and trauma.’ Dr Roger Baker. Is there a way of harnessing our emotions, of living in harmony with them and finding meaning and fulfilment through them? In Emotional Processing, Dr Roger Baker offers a new psychological approach. Basing his writing on twenty years of experience in therapy and the groundbreaking research he has undertaken with his research team, he explains how emotional processing works. He begins by examining the meaning and purpose of emotions, affirming the crucially important role they play in a full and healthy life. They are, he says, an advanced information system, not an opponent of rational thought. He then goes on to show how we have a sort of second immune system, able to absorb and break down emotional hurts and stress just as our first immune system deals with viruses and bacteria. When we move with this system of emotional processing, instead of blocking or hindering it, life’s troubles and traumas can be so much more easily absorbed. Illustrated throughout with examples from patients in psychological therapy and from everyday life, Emotional Processing offers all of us new and important insights into the path to emotional well-being.

Why Psychology Needs Theology
$30.99Add to cartWhy Psychology Needs Theology shows how Christian insights into human nature can be integrated with psychological theory and suggests ways that a basic understanding of faith might positively impact the therapeutic process.
In the first part of the book, Nancey Murphy explores the core assumptions of psychology from the vantage point of her expertise in the philosophy of science. Psychology needs theology and ethics, she argues, to help it address the question of what constitutes a good life. Taking an Anabaptist, or Radical-Reformation, perspective that emphasizes Jesus’ vulnerable love for his enemies and renunciation of power, Murphy challenges psychology to take seriously the goodness of self-renunciation.
In the second part of the book, other scholars extend and challenge Murphy’s model, discussing such topics as gender and culture. All those who work at the intersection of religion and psychology – teachers, pastors, specialists, and professional care providers – will find this exchange fruitful and valuable.

Dark Night Of The Soul
$16.99Add to cartNow in paperback: a distinguished psychiatrist, spiritual counsellor and bestselling author shows how the dark sides of the spiritual life are a vital ingredient in deep, authentic, healthy spirituality.
Gerald G. May, MD, one of the great spiritual teachers and writers of our time, argues that the dark ‘shadow’ side of the true spiritual life has been trivialised and neglected to our serious detriment. Superficial and naively upbeat spirituality does not heal and enrich the soul. Nor does the other tendency to relegate deep spiritual growth to only mystics and saints. Only the honest, sometimes difficult encounters with what Christian spirituality has called and described in helpful detail as ‘the dark night of the soul’ can lead to true spiritual wholeness.
May emphasises that the dark night is not necessarily a time of suffering and near despair, but a time of deep transition, a search for new orientation when things are clouded and full of mystery. The dark gives depth, dimension and fullness to the spiritual life.

Religious Thought And The Modern Psychologies (Revised)
$39.00Add to cartThe first edition of this book pioneered a broader and deeper critique of psychological theories and practices. Informed by hermeneutical theory, Browning’s widely acclaimed work drew attention to the ethical and even religious assumptions underlying psychology and has been deeply influential in psychology, pastoral counseling, and practical theology.
In this edition, Browning and his new co-author show how the field of social science has indeed grasped and appropriated the hermeneutical approach, though with only slight appreciation of the religious dimensions of the social-scientific endeavor. The new first chapter situates the discussion, and the core chapters of the book are updated. Two other new chapters include dialogue with psychotherapeutic theorists and evangelical writers on the relation of theology and psychology. This work will set the stage for the religion-psychology conversation for years to come. -

paralyzed by self-hatredAndrew Comiskey sees our weakness as “a threshold for holy power”–the point at which God can meet us for healing and equip us for service. He has seen it happen again and again. During many years of ministry, Comiskey, his wife, Annette, and their fellow “strugglers” have accompanied hundreds of wounded men and women to transformation at the cross of Christ. Telling real-life stories of despair, hope and lasting change, Comiskey lays out the foundations for healing from relational and sexual sin. With chapters focusing on particular areas of vulnerability for men and women, on the battle over homosexuality in church and culture, and on the essential role of the church in ongoing healing, Strength in Weakness makes clear the way to the cross–God’s sufficient answer to our deepest needs.

Identity And Experience In The New Testament
$29.00Add to cartHow do the New Testament documents present issues of passion, will, identity, and perception? How did the earliest followers of Jesus understand their experiences, behaviors, and suffering? These questions and more are addressed in this stimulating work by one of the most productive Continental New Testament scholars. Rather than approaching the New Testament with a Freudian, Jungian, or other modern psychological theory, Berger illuminates historically how peoples of the first century described their human experiences in relation to their encounters with God, Christ, demons, and the power of their own desires and will.

Looking For Jonathan
$13.49Add to cartThis is the story of how Jonathan was saved from the nightmare of Attention Deficit Disorder and the protocol for the simple focusing exercise which pulled him to safety. This father heard the cries of a child who was lost and was given a focusing exercise which transformed his son and allowed him to be all that God made him to be.

Minding God : Theology And The Cognitive Sciences
$21.00Add to cartGregory Peterson introduces these sciences: neuroscience, artificial intelligence, animal cognition, linguistics, and psychology–that specifically contribute to the new picture and their philosophical underpinnings. He shows its implications for rethinking longstanding Western assumptions about the unity of the self, the nature of consciousness, free will, inherited sin, and religious experience. Such findings also illumine our understanding of God’s own mind, the God-world relationship, new notions of divine-design, and the implications of a universe of evolving minds. Peterson is gifted at explaining scientific concepts and drawing their implications for religious belief and theology. His work demonstrates how new work in cognitive sciences upends and reconfigures many popular assumptions about human uniqueness, mind-body relationship, and how we speak of divine and human intelligence.

Forgiveness, like apple pie, is something most people want more of, but few know how to achieve genuinely. This book will provide fresh ideas on how to appropriate more of his psychologically powerful commodity to a discouraged world.
