  • Works Of John Wesley 30

    $77.99

Part of the most comprehensive collection of Wesley’s writings. The correspondence presented in this sixth volume of Wesley’s letters covers the period when Methodists in North America, by a “strange providence,” were severed from their relationship with the Church of England. Wesley made heroic efforts to provide them with ordained clergy and other materials they would need in their life as a “church.” It also illuminates the tensions that John’s decision to ordain clergy for Methodists outside of England created within his connexion in England-particularly with his brother Charles. The volume includes over 200 items not found in previous editions of Wesley’s letters. • What Did The Cross Achieve

    $9.99

A Classic Essay on Penal Substitutionary Atonement from Theologian J. I. Packer

Penal substitutionary atonement-the belief that Jesus’s death on the cross satisfied God’s wrath against sin-is central to the Christian faith, but frequently debated. Is it just to punish an innocent person in place of the guilty? How can the temporary death of one substitute for the eternal death of many? Why doesn’t the cross grant Christians unlimited permission to sin?

In this famous essay, late theologian J. I. Packer analyzes Scripture and the works of early Reformers to defend the truth of Christ’s substitutionary suffering and death, the heart of the Christian gospel. Considered one of the most significant short works on penal substitutionary atonement from the 20th century, this careful, concise essay has influenced prominent theologians and is essential reading for students, pastors, and laypeople.

*From Renowned Theologian J. I. Packer: This work was originally delivered as a Tyndale Biblical Theology Lecture

*Part of the Crossway Short Classics Series: Other titles include The Lord’s Work in the Lord’s Way and No Little People; The Life of God in the Soul of Man; and Fighting for Holiness

*Includes a Foreword by Mark Dever

  • History Of The Devil Ancient And Modern

    $24.99

The History of the Devil is a classic historical and religious book universally considered one of Daniel Defoe’s greatest works of non-fiction. The book was first published in 1726 and made an immediate impact on English literature, society and the ecclesiastical community in the early 18th century and continues to enrich humanity as a faithful source of historical and biblical truth and wisdom.

The History of the Devil cleverly unfolds the actions, devices, and evil nature of Satan and his host of devils against God and mankind throughout the history of the world. Defoe divides the book into two parts: Ancient, or the time from before the creation of the universe to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ; and Modern, or from the time of Christ and establishment of the Christian Church to the present day. His style is one that uniquely blends serious biblical principles and history with lighter satirical narrative, especially when dealing with mankind’s many false presuppositions about the Devil, and clearly delineates when each, or both, is applicable to the subject of discussion.

  • Essential Andrew Murray Collection

    $19.99

Andrew Murray is a nineteenth-century writer whose words still inspire today.

In Humility, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with his grace. It is often called the best work on the topic ever written.

Abiding in Christ invites you to listen to words from Scripture, read a daily meditation, pray, and surrender yourself anew to Christ. This thirty-one-day devotional is as timely now as it was in 1895, when it was first published.

Living a Prayerful Life outlines the way to overcome prayerlessness, which Murray believed was the greatest roadblock to spiritual growth. In his familiar devotional style, he then offers inspiring and practical guidelines for becoming a prayer warrior, including examples from the prayer lives of the apostle Paul, George Muller, and Hudson Taylor.

The wisdom in these pages will encourage and equip you to live a life of humility, surrender, and prayer, bringing you closer to the one who created you and longs to be with you.

  • Poems Of John Donne

    $13.95

John Donne was one of the great “metaphysical poets” in Elizabethan England. His work helped establish the English tradition of poetry, and influenced everyone afterwards from Alexander Pope to T.S. Eliot. Donne lived a tumultuous life before settling down and becoming the dean of St. Paul’s cathedral. He wrote everything from love sonnets to satires and elegies, but his greatest poems are undoubtedly the holy sonnets.

In this new edition of the complete 1633 collection of Donne’s poems, we see the work of a mature Christian poet and pastor writing about love, suffering, and our need for God.

“Batter my heart, three-person’d God, for you
    As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o’erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.” ~Holy Sonnet

  • Everlasting Man

    $12.95

In The Everlasting Man, a humorous defense of Christianity which inspired C.S. Lewis, Chesterton shows that once man is reduced to animal, history becomes utterly meaningless.

What truly gives man his dignity is the fact that he is so different from the beasts. What makes Christianity so different is that it tells of the story of the true man, the final man, the everlasting man, who came down in history and transformed it.

“This sketch of the human story began in a cave; the cave which popular science associates with the cave-man and in which practical discovery has really found archaic drawings of animals.

The second half of human history, which was like a new creation of the world, also begins in a cave . . . It was here that a homeless couple had crept underground with the cattle when the doors of the crowded caravanserai had been shut in their faces.

And it was here beneath the very feet of the passers-by, in a cellar under the very floor of the world, that Jesus Christ was born.” ~ From The Everlasting Man

  • Lectures To My Students

    $17.95

Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) was an English Baptist minister, famous as the Prince of Preachers.

One of the most eloquent men of his day, Spurgeon started charities, fought against liberalism, and endured depression with laughter and joy.

He was one of those rare theologians who lived a life of sacrifice while also enjoying good food and a fine cigar. However, the center of Spurgeon’s ministry was preaching the Gospel and changing hearts, and these lectures for aspiring pastors never forgets the center of the ministry: love for Christ and for the lost.

This book contains Spurgeon’s unabridged Lectures to My Students (Volumes 1-3).

“You will surely laugh out loud as you read Spurgeon. And just as surely, you will find your sin skewered, your faith reinforced, and your wisdom nourished. But there is something more: Spurgeon was a man who embodied the truth that to be in Christ means to be made ever more roundly human, more fully alive. . . To read Spurgeon is to catch that fire and become more vivid.” ~From Michael Reeves’s Introduction

  • Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos

    $11.95

In 1572, Roman Catholic soldiers slaughtered thousands of French Huguenots for their Protestant faith.

This calamity forced many Protestants to ask whether taking up arms against a king was even lawful.

Many Christians thought that even in the case of persecution, kings had absolute power and lesser magistrates had no right to resist them.

Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos: A Defense of Liberty Against Tyrants, written by an anonymous Huguenot, is a powerful tract that makes a case for why Christians can sometimes lawfully resist and fight against tyrants and persecutors of the faith.

The apostles told the Jews that they needed to obey God rather than man when it came to the Gospel, and to this day many Christians need to be reminded that men only derive their power from God and there are indeed times when resisting the authorities may be lawful and even biblically required.

This tract is thoroughly biblical and a great testament to the courage and convictions of our fathers in the faith.

“Kings must be obeyed for God’s cause, and not against God, and then, when they serve and obey God, and not otherwise. . . That sentence of God Almighty must always remain irrevocably true: ‘I will not give My glory to any other,’ (Is. 42:8), that is, no man shall have such absolute authority.”~ From the Vindiciae

  • Lex Rex : The Law And The King

    $27.95

“A man commanding unjustly and ruling tyrannically has in that no power from God.”

When Lex, Rex was written, the Reformation in England and Scotland was in crisis.

The English Civil War had just begun after Charles I tried to impose popish rituals on the church and asserted his divine right as king to overrule parliament.

Against these grandiose claims the Scottish pastor Samuel Rutherford wrote a book and changed western political philosophy forever as it led to the thinking that enabled the American revolution.

In his very learned work, Rutherford shows from Scripture, classical authors, and scholastic theologians that the king is not above the law; and that when the king violates it flagrantly, the people are right to resist him, even to the point of war.

The title Lex Rex is Latin for “Law is King”.

Divine right theorists had said that the King was the law, but Rutherford reverses this and shows that natural law is above the king, and thus there are times when citizens can and must obey God rather than man.

“Rutherford was a practical and pastoral theologian who could soar to great heights of glorious consolation. . . But Rutherford was also a bare-knuckle brawler who was clearly able to hold his own in the theological bar fight that was the seventeenth century. You are now holding in your hands the evidence of that.” ~ Introduction by Douglas Wilson

  • Orthodoxy

    $11.95

In this brilliant book, the enormously fat and jolly G.K. Chesterton gives a stirring defense of Christianity. Chesterton fought against the reductionist materialism with laughter, joy, and gratitude for the beauty of the world God has given us. We usually think of orthodoxy and the tenets of the Christian faith as dry, arbitrary, and perhaps even nonsensical. Chesterton shows that orthodoxy is beautiful and fits perfectly the strange, quirky world. For those of us who do not pay any attention to the strangeness of the world, this book is essential reading. The world may not have fairies, but it does have the sun, rivers, trees, and the sky, and they are as strange as anything we will find in a fairy tale. Read this book, then go outside and marvel.

“Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, ‘Do it again’; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, ‘Do it again’ to the sun; and every evening, ‘Do it again’ to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.” ~From Chesterton’s Orthodoxy.

  • Rare Jewel Of Christian Contentment

    $15.95

Jeremiah Burroughs reminds us that peace and calm in the midst of great troubles is a requirement for a Christian, and that learning contentment is the ABCs of the Christian life. But contentment does not come naturally. We excuse our stress, anxiety, and discouragement by claiming that we are just planning for the future and reacting normally to trials. But in this Puritan classic, Burroughs presents readers with the high calling to be content whatever the circumstances: “Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, which freely submits to and delights in God’s wise and fatherly disposal.”

  • Thoughts For Young Men

    $8.95

Solomon says that the glory of young men is their strength (Prov. 20:29). Young men have so much to give the Church, but sadly the modern Church has taught them nothing about how to exercise their strength in a godly way.

This book by 19th century pastor J.C. Ryle is short, but gives young men what they need: straight talk about being a Christian man.

Ryle does not mince words when describing the temptations to pride, lust, laziness, and more. The devil is like a roaring lion who wants to devour young men, and the only way to defeat him is to fight sin and be like Jesus.

This classic is a powerful reminder from a wise man about how to be strong in the Lord and to give no opportunity to the devil. Read it and go, fight, win.

“Young men, this enemy is working hard for your destruction, however little you may think it. You are the prize for which he is specially contending for. He foresees you must either be the blessings or the curses of your day, and he is trying hard to effect a place in your hearts early in your life, in order that you may help advance his kingdom each day…. Whether you will hear or not, I cannot, dare not, leave you alone.” ~ J.C. Ryle

  • Temple

    $12.95

Although George Herbert was a pastor of a small remote church in Elizabethan England, he came to fame because of a small collection of poems called The Temple. In this short but beautiful collection of poetry, Herbert devised 116 new poetic forms to capture his experiences of awe, sorrow, glory, turmoil, repentance, and heart-rending joy, all of it dedicated to God, not man.

In this book, we have a picture of the full range of human experience and emotion, felt by a man being sanctified by God and describing it with all his poetic powers.

“Sir, I pray deliver this little book to my dear brother … and tell him he shall find in it a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed betwixt God and my soul, before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus my Master, in whose service I have now found perfect freedom; desire him to read it: and then, if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor soul, let it be made public; if not, let him burn it; for I and it are less than the least of God’s mercies.” ~ George Herbert

Erasmus argued that all the commands in Scripture clearly showed that man had the ability to obey God through his own power. In this work, Luther replies that such an argument emptied the Gospel of its power, and that instead man’s will is bound captive to sin, and that only through the Gospel are we freed from its power.

While this rambunctious and punchy book is entertaining, Luther never loses sight of the heart of the matter: man’s inability to earn his salvation and his absolute need for grace and forgiveness.

“A man cannot be thoroughly humbled until he comes to know that his salvation is utterly beyond his own powers, counsel, endeavors, will, and works, and absolutely depending on the will, counsel, pleasure, and work of another, that is, of God only.” ~ Luther in The Bondage of the Will

  • Honest Faith : Or, The Clue Of The Maze

    $14.99

My soul, rest thou only in God, for my hope is from him. – Psalm 62:5

The paragraphs of this little book are not supposed to be an argument. It was not my aim to convince an opponent but to assist a friend. How I have personally threaded the labyrinth of life thus far may be of helpful interest to some other soul who is in a maze. I hope that these pages will assist some true heart to say “he fought his doubts and gather’d strength.” Let no man’s heart fail him, for the prevalent skepticisms of today are but “spectres of the mind.” Face them, and they fly.

  • According To Promise

    $16.99

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. – 2 Corinthians 7:1

The first part of this book is meant to be a sieve to separate the chaff from the wheat. Use it on your own soul. It may be the most profitable and beneficial work you have ever done. He who looked into his accounts and found that his business was losing money was saved from bankruptcy. This may happen also to you. If, however, you discover that your heavenly business is prospering, it will be a great comfort to you. You cannot lose by honestly searching your own heart.

The second part of this book examines God’s promises to His children. The promises of God not only exceed all precedent, but they also exceed all imitation. No one has been able to compete with God in the language of liberality. The promises of God are as much above all other promises as the heavens are above the earth.

  • Works Of John Wesley 32

    $77.99

From the beginning of his ministry John Wesley was committed to nurturing in his own life and in the communities he served “health of body and of soul.” This volume provides a window into his concern for “health of body” by collecting all of his writings related to health and wellness. These range from his best-selling home guide to health care, the Primitive Physic, through his recommendation of electrical-shock therapy, to his concern for nervous disorders. The volume will be of keen interest to all who are committed to recovering Wesley’s holistic understanding of salvation and ministry in the present church, as well as to those seeking a better understanding of medical care in the eighteenth century. John Wesley published a collection of advice for preserving health and treating diseases, and his Primitive Physick, went through twenty-three editions in Wesley’s lifetime-among the highest number of anything that he published-and stayed in print (and use!) continuously into the 1880s. Those who are aware of this collection, and have glanced at a few of his prescriptions for ailments tend to dismiss it in bemusement. Far from being an amusing avocation, John Wesley’s interest in health and healing was a central dimension of his ministry and of the mission of early Methodism. Moreover, when considered in its historical context, Wesley’s precedent provides a model of the concern for holistic health and healing that is instructive for his present ecclesial heirs. As a primary record of one of the founders of the Wesleyan/Methodist movement, John Wesley’s Medical Writings are crucial to an understanding of the beginnings of that movement, its reflection of the context from which it emerged, and its lasting impact on English and American Methodism and the broader culture. It is likewise absolutely essential for anyone in any of the potential reader groups listed above who wants to understand the context and sensibility around issues of bodily health and Christian salvation out of which Wesleyan theology, worship, spirituality, hymnody, and conferencing emerged. For a church or movement that declares salvation and wholeness as works of divine presence impacting embodied life in the real world, Wesley’s reflections on human health are not just relics of a pre-medical age but reveal a deeper sensibility about spiritual health pertinent to the Church’s ongoing commitment to flesh and blood human health and flourishing in the real world.

  • Haunted Man : A Forgotten Classic Abridged And Annotated By Dave Swavely

    $11.99

    What is a Forgotten Classic?

Great works by some of the world’s best fiction writers have nevertheless gone largely unnoticed. Unfortunate timing in the marketplace, inadequate distribution, and changes in public taste are just a few of the reasons for this. Yet many of these works can be as enjoyable and meaningful as far more famous books. Cruciform Press is excited to begin publishing some forgotten classics of special interest to those who enjoy fiction that intelligently explores matters of faith.

This edition of Haunted Man, by Charles Dickens, has been abridged significantly to make it more enjoyable for modern readers, while retaining every essential element of the story. It also includes an introduction with character descriptions and other helpful information, and a thought-provoking afterword discussing some of the spiritual issues addressed by the book.

A college professor named Redlaw is a good man plagued by bad memories of a traumatic childhood, compounded by a terrible betrayal and loss during his young adulthood. When an ethereal demonic doppelganger of himself appears and offers to wipe away those memories, Redlaw eagerly accepts, and also receives the ability to spread this “gift” to others.

Featuring the breathless suspense, colorful characters, and witty humor that has made Dickens such a beloved author, the story also tackles some of the deepest philosophical and theological questions ever raised in his writings. His answer to “the problem of evil” is of both literary and religious interest.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is one of the most popular and respected authors in history (A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, and many more). Dave Swavely is a Dickens fan who knows what it’s like to be haunted by the past and delivered by the cross of Christ.

  • 2 Ways : The Early Christian Vision Of Discipleship From The Didache And Th

    $8.00

How did earliest Christians receive and understand the teaching of Jesus and the apostles? These writings, among the earliest used in training new disciples, show a clear, vibrant, practical faith concerned with all aspects of discipleship in daily life–vocation, morality, family life, social justice, the sacraments, prophesy, citizenship, and leadership.

For the most part, these writings have remained buried in academia, analyzed by scholars but seldom used for building up the church community. Now, at a time when Christians of every persuasion are seeking clarity by returning to the roots of their faith, these simple, direct teachings shed light on what it means to be a follower of Christ in any time or place.

The Didache, an anonymous work composed in the late first century AD, was lost for centuries before being rediscovered in 1873. The Shepherd was written by a former slave named Hermas in the second century AD or possibly even earlier.

  • Love In The Void

    $12.00

Simone Weil, the great mystic and philosopher for our age, shows where anyone can find God.

Why is it that Simone Weil, with her short, troubled life and confounding insights into faith and doubt, continues to speak to today’s spiritual seekers? Was it her social radicalism, which led her to renounce privilege? Her ambivalence toward institutional religion? Her combination of philosophical rigor with the ardor of a mystic?

Albert Camus called Simone Weil “the only great spirit of our time.” Andre Gide found her “the most truly spiritual writer of this century.” Her intense life and profound writings have influenced people as diverse as T. S. Eliot, Charles De Gaulle, Pope Paul VI, and Adrienne Rich.

The body of work she left–most of it published posthumously–is the fruit of an anguished but ultimately luminous spiritual journey.

After her untimely death at age thirty-four, Simone Weil quickly achieved legendary status among a whole generation of thinkers. Her radical idealism offered a corrective to consumer culture. But more importantly, she pointed the way, especially for those outside institutional religion, to encounter the love of God – in love to neighbor, love of beauty, and even in suffering.

  • Greatest Thing In The World

    $14.99

    A Timeless Classic

One Sunday evening, D. L. Moody and friends were gathered around a fire. Some guests urged Moody to expound on some portion of Scripture. Being tired after the services of the day, he gruffly told them to ask Henry Drummond, who was also present. After some urging, Drummond finally produced a small New Testament from his hip pocket, opened it to the thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians and, without any notes, began to speak on the subject of love. Moody said, “It seemed to me that I had never heard anything so beautiful, and I determined not to rest until I brought Henry Drummond to Northfield to deliver that address. Since then I have requested the principles of my schools to have it read before the students every year.

“Over the decades, this teaching has become one of the best-loved and most inspiring messages on love ever written. Other writings of Drummond in this unique collection include:
    The Program of Christianity
    The City Without a Church
    The Changed Life
    Pax Vobiscum (Peace with You)
    Eternal Life

Through this dynamic message, we can experience the beauty of lasting love in all its fullness and learn how to bring God’s peace and joy to those around us

In this classic work on the sovereignty of God, A. W. Pink explains how His sovereignty is characterized in creation and salvation, and then he describes its relationship to human will. Finally, Pink addresses the proper attitude believers should take towards God’s sovereignty, and how to overcome obstacles in doing so. Pink was a student of theologians like St. Augustine, St. Aquinas, John Calvin, and Jonathan Edwards, and his writing reflects many of their views. Ultimately, however, Pink believed that true faith rests “not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

  • Morning And Evening NIV

    $19.95

For tens of thousands of Christians, Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening has been a daily devotional guide through life’s ups and downs. But as time has passed, younger generations, nurtured on contemporary versions of the Bible and less familiar with Spurgeon’s beautiful but sometimes difficult prose of the nineteenth century, have needed a devotional guide that made sense to them, written in their language, using the Scripture with which they are familiar. To that end, this new revised edition of Morning and Evening offers readers the best of the past-Spurgeon’s insight and wise counsel-and the best of the present-the fresh, meaningful prose of the New International Version.

    Special Features:
    * Each day’s devotions are presented on a two-page spread for complete ease of use.
    * Each of the 732 devotions-one for every morning and evening of the year-provides inspiring meditations on portions of Scripture drawn from every book of the Bible.
    * A new topical index helps readers discover Spurgeon’s thoughts on various topics important to Christian life.
    * An index of texts lets readers find what Spurgeon had to say about a particular Bible verse. Spurgeon has penned meditations, expressed simply but eloquently, that continue to draw readers to faith and obedience.

Though Spurgeon published thousands of sermons and many books, Morning and Evening remains by far his most popular work. This attractive, contemporary edition makes it easier than ever to enjoy it.

  • On The Incarnation

    $14.99

During the fourth century, controversy raged in the church regarding the nature of Jesus Christ. On one side were the Arians, led by the Bishop Arius, who argued that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were materially separate from one another. They believed that Jesus had been created out of “non-existence” and thus was not on the same level of divinity as God the Father. In response, Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, wrote On the Incarnation, a staunch defense of the full divinity and full humanity of Christ. In simple language and with Scripture as a guide, he argued for the eternal nature of the Trinity and that Jesus Christ is not a creation of God the Father but has existed from the very beginning. Athanasius celebrates the redeeming work that came forth through the God-man, Jesus Christ, and His eternal existence and essential unity with the Father.

Ultimately, Athanasius was exiled five times by four different Roman emperors due to his defense of the Trinity, but he remained faithful to his beliefs. Today, On the Incarnation is often included on lists of books every Christian should read.

  • Works Of John Wesley 27

    $77.99

Although many of the letters of John Wesley are of value as literature-especially as crisp statements of his views or desires with little attempt at embellishment-their major importance is as a revelation of him as a man and of the people and events of his day, especially those linked with the Methodist movement. They furnish us, in fact, with a portrait through seventy years that is both more revealing in detail and fuller in coverage than any other source. The correspondence presented in this third of seven planned volumes of Wesley’s Letters illuminates critical developments in the Wesleyan movement in the period between 1756 and 1765, including very significant rifts between John Wesley and his brother Charles and between John Wesley and his wife Mary, Wesley’s attempts to deal with radical enthusiasts and separatists (such as Thomas Maxfield) within the Methodist movement, his relationship to Greek Orthodox leader Gerasimos (Erasmus) Avlonites, and Wesley’s activities related to the Seven Years War.
