  • Above All Earthly Powrs

    $33.50

In our postmodern world, every view has a place at the table but none has the final say. How should the church confess Christ in today’s cultural context?

Above All Earthly Pow’rs, the fourth and final volume of the series that began in 1993 with No Place for Truth, portrays the West in all its complexity, brilliance, and emptiness. As David F. Wells masterfully depicts it, the postmodern ethos of the West is relativistic, individualistic, therapeutic, and yet remarkably spiritual. Wells shows how this postmodern ethos has incorporated into itself the new religious and cultural relativism, the fear and confusion, that began with the last century’s waves of immigration and have continued apace in recent decades.

Wells’s book culminates in a critique of contemporary evangelicalism aimed at both unsettling and reinvigorating readers. Churches that market themselves as relevant and palatable to consumption-oriented postmoderns are indeed swelling in size. But they are doing so, Wells contends, at the expense of the truth of the gospel. By placing a premium on marketing rather than truth, the evangelical church is in danger of trading authentic engagement with culture for worldly success.

Welding extensive cultural analysis with serious theology, Above All Earthly Pow’rs issues a prophetic call that the evangelical church cannot afford to ignore.

  • Uprising : A Revolution Of The Soul

    $19.99

We are all, as Erwin Raphael McManus states, broken pieces of the image of God. And as Christians, too often we talk about God’s ability to change lives without fully understanding how to access that power. The reason is simple: we ourselves have never been radically transformed. McManus explains how many people unknowingly block God from changing us and teaches readers the “texture of the heart” required to unleash God’s transforming power within us. He also demonstrates the passion and purpose that lie ahead when we undertake the journey that leads us to the true source, the very character of God. Fascinating stories from McManus’s personal life and ministry, paired with fresh biblical teaching and profound insights, will astonish and challenge readers to break free from negative habits, destructive emotions, and other strongholds that hinder lasting transformation and to turn toward a life marked by enlightenment, nobility, and virtue.

  • Go Big : Lead Your Church To Explosive Growth

    $20.99

Bill Easum and Bil Cornelius are two strikingly different, yet surprisingly similar pastors. One undertook to revitalize a moribund mainline church; the other, to plant a new nondenominational congregation. Coming from different generations, their ministries took place under dissimilar circumstances. Yet both have experienced substantial, even explosive, growth in congregational mission and membership. Along the way they learned some important lessons, such as the centrality of strong pastoral leadership, the need for an unhesitant pursuit of excellence in all areas of the church’s ministry, and the requirement that you picture an audacious vision for your church and live into that vision.

Regardless of the current size of your church, you will find here inspiring, ready-to-implement ideas to help your church go BIG.

  • Heart Of The Cross

    $35.00

Theologies have often pointed to the cross as a place of suffering and sacrifice, while feminist critiques have frequently argued against interpretations of the cross as patriarchal valorizing of suffering. W. Anne Joh points toward a new interpretation of the cross as a place of love, where God and humanity come together in a surprising way. She interprets the cross as performing a double gesture that has a subversive effect. The cross works both to pay homage to overwhelming and multiple and complex oppressive powers (e.g. the empire) and simultaneously to menace those powers. The cross as a double gesture speaks to those who have shifted from a typical politics of identity to political identities shaped more by postmodern ambiguities of difference. Utilizing the Korean concept of jeong (a notion that helps clarify how the double gesture of the cross inspires a new relationality), Joh constructs a theology that is feminist, political and love-centered, while acknowledging the cross as source of pain and suffering as well.

A real gift of Joh’s book is its interdisciplinary approach, carefully fusing postcolonial theories of hybridity and mimicry (Bhabha, Trihn), feminist poststructuralist psychoanalysis of abjection (Kristeva), cultural studies of the contemporary world, and more traditional christologies. The result is Joh’s innovative vision of the heart of Christology as a call for political love that is stronger than powers of oppression.

  • Jew Among The Evangelicals

    $23.00

In this insightful and accessible book, religion journalist Mark Pinsky takes the curious reader on a tour of the fascinating world of Sunbelt evangelicalism. Pinsky, religion reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, uses his unique position as a Jew covering evangelical Christianity to help nonevangelicals understand the hopes, fears, and motivations of this growing subculture and breaks down some of the stereotypes that nonevangelicals have of evangelicals.

“I hope you’ll find laughter, perhaps puzzlement, and heartfelt interest in how people just like you wrestle with feelings, values, and beliefs that touch the core of their beings. And I hope you’ll catch a glimpse of someone learning to understand and get along with folks whose convictions differ from his own,” Pinsky writes in the introduction.

This book will appeal to Jews, mainline and liberal Christians, and curious blue-staters, as well as evangelicals who want to read an outsider’s perspective on their culture. As the country takes to the polls for midterm congressional elections, this book will shed light on how and why evangelical culture is becoming increasingly entwined in American politics.

  • Graceful Speech : An Invitation To Preaching

In doing so, she creates a book that is more holistic than any other homiletics text currently on the market.

Hogan begins with a theological rationale for preaching, which serves as a basis for understanding the identity of the preacher. She then explores the context for preaching, showing how to interpret a scriptural text, design a sermon, and use illustrations and examples. She also discusses preaching for special occasions, the use of different technologies in preaching, and the importance of delivery. The book includes questions for reflection.

  • Barth For Armchair Theologians

    $24.00

“Most of the English-speaking world still has a ‘cartoonish’ understanding of Karl Barth. How appropriate, then, that a book with actual cartoons should appear to demolish the stereotypes. John Franke’s Barth for ArmchairTheologians offers an accurate, insightful, and at times whimsical introduction to the great thinker from Basel.” Joseph L. Mangina, Wycliffe College, Toronto, author of Karl Barth: Theologian of Christian Witness Written by experts but designed for the novice, the Armchair series provides accurate, concise, and witty overviews of some of the most profound moments and theologians in Christian history. • Choosing To Preach

    $24.99

Traditional forms of ministry-including the sermon- are being scrutinized and challenged, leaving pastors confused over how best to communicate to today’s listeners. This forward-looking textbook delivers a strong call to ministers to indeed choose to preach biblical sermons. But while preaching itself is non-negotiable, the exact form it takes can be much more flexible. Several models of sermon preparation are provided, using questions to guide the way. As you discern your message from the Bible, will you begin with the text (deductive) or with the listener (inductive)? Will you focus on the idea (cognitive) or the image (affective)? The choices you make lead to five possible sermon structures (declarative, pragmatic, narrative, visionary, and integrative), each of which is described in detail and related to well-known contemporary preachers, including John MacArthur, Rick Warren, Eugene Lowry, and Rob Bell. Includes discussion questions, practical exercises, and accompanying CD-ROM.

Deep Ministry in a Shallow World will show you a new way to prayerfully reflect on the questions you face in your youth ministry every day so you can find the answers that will take it to deeper places. That’s because authors Chap Clark and Kara Powell have gathered significant research findings that will help shift your ministry paradigm.

    Did you know that:

    * the typical strategies we use to build relationships with kids might actually cause them to trust us

less because of what this generation has endured?

    * recent research on communication could help us move past the witty talks and funny stories we work so hard to develop and instead actually connect the Bible to kids’ lives?

    * studies show that offering students “just Jesus” and not helping them at home, school, and in their neighborhoods might not help them very much at all?

The authors’ research also led to their development of the Deep Design problem-solving process-a revolutionary model that will give you better tools than ever before to address every last issue you’ll encounter in youth ministry.

  • Athanasius : The Life Of Antony

    $14.99

A beautiful portrait of the radical devotion of St. Antony and his call to holy living.

“It was truly amazing that being alone in such a desert Antony was niether distracted by the demons who confronted him, nor was he frightened of their ferocity when so many four-legged beasts and reptiles were there. But truly he was one who, as Scripture says, having trusted in the Lord, was like Mount Zion, keeping his mind unshaken and unruffled; so instead the demons fled and the wild beasts, as it is written, made peace with him.”–from The Life of Antony

Athanasius (c. 295-373) was an Alexandrian whose life was committed at an early age to the Christian community growing there. He became a controversial bishop and one of the most vivid and forceful personalities in political and religious affairs. His famous account, The Life of Antony, inaugurated the genre of the lives of the saints and established the frame of Christian hagiography, quickly attaining the status of a classic and becoming one of the most influential writings in Christian history. It tells the spiritual story of St. Antony, the founder of Christian monasticism. A pioneer in spiritual experience, he marked a new epoch in the Christian experience and set the terms for the Church’s ideal of the life of devotion. He transferred the center of monastic life from the periphery of established communities to the barren and isolated setting of a hermitage, away from civilization, in a location of solitude and serenity. The Life of Antony is a beautiful portrait of what a life committed to God demands and promises.

  • Kindness Revolution : The Company-Wide Culture Shift That Inspires Phenomen

    $22.99

Despite years of focus on the importance of customer service, most businesses still have a lot to learn. Too many merely tweak a script, roll out a new offer, then disappear from the scene, leaving their frontline staff — often underpaid and badly overworked — to expertly, cheerfully handle all the real-life encounters with real-life customers who can make or break a company. That’s no way to run a business, says customer service expert Ed Horrell. If you treat your frontline employees with indifference or disregard, you can expect them to treat your customers with indifference — and you can then expect to have indifferent customers who will drop you for the next best thing without a murmur of regret. Combining extensive research with inspiring real-life examples from companies known for their outstanding customer service — such as L.L.Bean, Chick-fil-A, Nordstrom, Mrs. Fields, St. Jude Children’s Research Center, The Ritz-Carlton, FedEx, and more — Horrell explains in The Kindness Revolution that providing exceptional, compassionate customer service can only happen when you build a deep and lasting relationship with your employees. And it is kindness, says Horrell, that most characterizes that relationship. The Kindness Revolution traces the culture characteristics of the standout companies, including their strong conviction that: Each employee has an important job to do. Their corporate entity has a meaningful purpose-to serve the customer in a way that delivers value. Each employee should be empowered to make decisions. They attract the best employees and customers by running an organization based on sincerity and consideration. There is value in dignity and respect and courtesy — and kindness. For organizations large and small, of any size or industry, The Kindness Revolution is a resounding wake-up call to change the way your company thinks about its employees, and to practice the basic values of dignity, respect, courtesy, and kindness from top to bottom throughout your organization. The way you treat your employees will be the way they treat your customers. Follow the wise advice and insightful examples in The Kindness Revolution, and experience the enormous payback in loyal customers, a more prosperous company — and a better way of life.

Something sinuous in the water brushed against Paige’s knee. She jerked her leg away. What was that? She rose to a sitting position, groped around with her left hand. Fine wisps wound themselves around her fingers. Hair? She yanked backward, but the tendrils clung. Something solid bumped her wrist. Paige gasped. With one frantic motion she shook her arm free, grabbed the side of the hot tub, and heaved herself out. Paige Williams slips into her hot tub in the blackness of night-and finds herself face to face with death. Alone, terrified, fleeing a dark past, Paige must make an unthinkable choice. In Violet Dawn, hurtling events and richly drawn characters collide in a breathless story of murder, the need to belong, and faith’s first glimmer.
