  • Latin Primer 3 Teachers Edition (Teacher’s Guide)

    $32.00

Over half of the English language is derived from Latin.
    unicorn: cornu,horn
    humble: humus, earth
    gregarious: grex, flock
    pantry: panis, bread
    flamingo: flamma, flame

These and thousands of other words we use every day keep this “dead” language–a language of kings and poets, of scrolls and secrets–alive. And this means that when we study Latin, we’re not just learning about Rome–we’re learning about ourselves. Rediscover this time-honored language, which led classical education innovator Dorothy Sayers to declare that “Latin should be begun as early as possible . . . when the chanting of ‘amo, amas, amat’ is as ritually agreeable to the feelings as the chanting of ‘eeny, meeny, miney, moe.'”

In Latin Primer 3, the language basics explored in Primers 1 and 2 continue, with an increasing emphasis on translation. Revised and expanded, this text introduces students (grades 5 and up) to Latin’s final noun declensions and verb conjugations, as well asA to the perfect tense, indirect objects, simple prepositions, and more, opening up broad frontiers for their understanding and enjoyment of this early language.

Those of you familiar with the older editions of Latin Primer 3 may wonder what’s different about this new edition. If you’ve been using the new Latin Primer 1 and 2, you probably have a good idea what all the excitement is about!

To begin, the content and teaching approach of this third edition is fundamentally the same as before. We have added more exercises, moved some of the vocabulary around, etc., but these new editions won’t force teachers or parents to struggle through a long period of adjustment. If anything, this new edition will be much, much easier to use.

Why is that? Well, actually, there are several reasons.

First, the Primer 3 now features weekly Word Lists. Just like Primers 1 and 2, students will receive a new Word List every week, rather than once every few weeks. This transition from Primer 2 to Primer 3 has never been more simple or familiar.

Second, we have completely redesigned the layout. While older editions were arranged by category–a word list section, exercise section, and test section–the new edition has been arranged in a simple lesson-by-lesson format. For example, all of Lesson 1’s components are grouped together, back-to-back. When you finish one lesson, you’re on to the next. No more flipping back and forth between sections: everything you need for each lesson is right at your fingertips, whe

  • Grace For The Journey

    $31.00

Every community of faith journeys through periods of transition. In Grace for the Journey: Practices and Possibilities for In-Between Times, authors Beverly Thompson and George Thompson invite congregations to open themselves to the grace-filled possibilities that accompany these in-between periods. • Becoming The Pastor You Hope To Be

    $31.00

Becoming the Pastor You Hope to Be unapologetically urges clergy readers to develop practices that will help them become more excellent ministers. A long-time field educator, now serving as a denominational staff person responsible for ministerial formation, Barbara Blodgett believes excellence is a matter of doing simple things with care and consistency. Ministers who commit themselves to excellence will grow and flourish, and even become happier in ministry.Blodgett urges ministers to resist praise and instead to ask for feedback, to seek the company of mentors who are better than the reader is at what he or she does, to be vulnerable before their peers in order to learn from them, and to define themselves as a leader who does not merely take activist stances but risks entering into deep, transformative relationships. Improvement in ministry, Blodgett argues, comes about not through extraordinary leaps and bounds but rather through adopting simple habits and carrying through on small but thoughtfully made choices.

  • Sounds Of Our Offerings

    $31.00

The Sounds of Our Offerings is good news about the music of the church. It recounts what has been learned from studying nine congregations where music promotes the full, active, conscious participation of the worshipers and where it has done so consistently and coherently for many years. Pastors and musicians reflect on their work together and offer rich insights about what works and what does not. Lay musicians and members of the congregation also share their experiences with music in worship.

Though no site was without its struggles, and at times difficult choices had to be made, for the most part, we see unremarkable, week to week, year to year, faithful rendering of music for prayer and praise. We see that sometimes the nature of the music took a slightly different turn, one that built upon the foundations of the past. The music choices in these churches are not restricted to one particular era or style, but rather reflect the broader church’s music repertoire, including the best recently written music.

These are the stories of churches with a reputation for their fine music programs, churches that, with their leaders and congregations, have worked out these programs in consistent, coherent ways. In most cases, the programs span multiple priests/pastors and musicians. The Sounds of Our Offerings is about excellent music and how it has found its way into the life and faith practices of these congregations.

  • Seeking Wisdom From God

    $33.95

Seeking Wisdom From God is a must read for anyone who is hungry for the meat of God’s Word. The answers to life’s questions as well as absolute truth are found in the Word of God. However, for the most part, these answers and truths lay beneath the surface of the verses and only when we seek discernment from God will they be revealed. God does not hide His truth to keep His children from finding it, but He did intentionally make deeper levels of understanding accessible only with His help.

Seeking Wisdom from God is about God’s promise to give abundantly to anyone who will seek wisdom through Him. God will reveal understanding that has escaped even the most learned of scholars. According to 1 Cor. 1:28,29, God’s extraordinary way of revealing His truth is through ordinary people.

With our advances in understanding the ancient Hebrew and Greek languages coupled with the dissecting of Scripture using historical, textual, and literary analysis, knowledge has increased exponentially. However, knowledge always increases faster than wisdom, and because of this, we have a glut of biblical knowledge and a shortage of wisdom. We need to know less and understand more.

This book chronicles the results of a heart and mind that learned early in life to go to the heavenly Father for understanding. It is a personal twenty-six-year case study of the faithfulness of God, who will give wisdom to anyone who asks. Seeking wisdom from God early in the author’s Christian walk did not happen because he was wise, but because of circumstances that God orchestrated for his training on how to find truth in His Word. May the different views shared in this book confirm that discernment of spiritual truth can only come from the spiritual.

  • Dont Call It A Comeback

    $17.99

Some of today’s most influential young evangelicals outline the relevance and theological foundations of Christian orthodoxy and evangelicalism. Recent cultural interest in evangelicalism has led to considerable confusion about what the term actually means. Many young Christians are tempted to discard the label altogether. But evangelicalism is not merely a political movement in decline or a sociological phenomenon on the rise, as it has sometimes been portrayed. It is, in fact, a helpful theological profile that manifests itself in beliefs, ethics, and church life. DeYoung and other key twenty- and thirty-something evangelical Christian leaders present Don’t Call It a Comeback: The Same Evangelical Faith for a New Day to assert the stability, relevance, and necessity of Christian orthodoxy today. This book introduces young, new, and under-discipled Christians to the most essential and basic issues of faith in general and of evangelicalism in particular. Kevin DeYoung and contributors like Russell Moore, Tullian Tchividjian, Darrin Patrick, Justin Taylor, Thabiti Anyabwile, and Tim Challies examine what evangelical Christianity is and does within the broad categories of history, theology, and practice. They demonstrate that evangelicalism is still biblically and historically rooted and remains the same framework for faith that we need today.

  • Courageous Compassion : A Prophetic Homiletic In Service To The Church

    $19.99

A wonderfully intelligent, forceful book, bringing together masterful sermons by noted preacher Jerry Taylor and responses by world-renowned scholars.

Jerry Taylor’s preaching is characterized as a ”Compassionate Prophetic Voice” delivered in the traditional African American form: ”Start slow, stay low, rise higher, and end in fire.” His preaching is intelligent and wedded to the biblical text, effectively engaging listeners before exploding with persuasion.

COURAGEOUS COMPASSION provides examples of ten of Taylor’s best-crafted sermons, including ”The Curse of Babel,” ”They That Wait upon the Lord,” ”Alive to God,” and ”Courageous Compassion.” Respected theorists, biblical scholars, and denominational leaders have responded to each sermon, providing analysis, homiletic insight, reflections from the tradition of Black preaching, and comments on what Taylor is ”doing right.”

This volume accents the work of one homiletic practitioner whose work demands careful reflection and wide distribution. Its lively writing style, and its use of concrete images and examples to connect serious reflections with Taylor’s sermons, also serves as an example of how listeners and readers can interact with such rich preaching.

  • Sacred Moment : Becoming Holy Right Where You Are

    $17.99

What does it mean to be a holy person? The answer might surprise you. This delightful yet challenging book from spiritual director Albert Haase provides practical wisdom for becoming holy–right in the midst of “ordinary” life. “Any and every situation holds the grace for the transformation called holiness. . . . [By] imitating Christ and emptying myself for the benefit of another,” Haase writes, “I can become holy right where I am.” Haase guides us in this new way of living, offering practices that help us discern what God is calling us to in each moment, as well as clear direction for living in the Spirit, the source of our holiness. With brief, engaging chapters that share real stories of people who are living out holy transformation and short reflection questions, this book is designed to fit realistically into our already full lives. “I believe that holiness is not as elusive or impossible as most of us think,” Haase says. “That’s not to say it’s easy; it certainly is not. But I think there are many people in the world . . . who know that God calls them right where they are. Living in and guided by the Spirit, they imitate Jesus: they selflessly respond to God’s call in this sacred moment for the enrichment of others.” You can too. Here’s how.

Ethical lessons drawn from a challenging ancient narrative

What can we possibly learn about our relationships to others from reading a story about an ancient father who raised a knife to slaughter his beloved only son?

Contemporary Christian ethicists, faced with such dilemmas, are often tempted to treat the Hebrew Bible in a limited, distanced, and even dismissive way. Yet Emily Arndt here argues that those ancient scriptures can be a vital resource for Christian ethical studies. She focuses on a close analysis of the akedah – the story of Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Isaac – to demonstrate the power of even the most troubling and uncomfortable Old Testament narratives to teach valuable lessons and develop in us the disposition and skills we need to relate authentically and ethically to others.

An essential complement to his now classic Until Justice and Peace Embrace, the forthcoming Love and Justice, and Justice, this book makes clear why Wolterstorff is one of the church’s most incisive and compelling voices. Reflections on Justice, Peace, and Liturgy invites us not simply into new ways of thinking, but a transformational way of life.

  • Word Has Come Down

    $12.95

Lent holds a central place in the worship of many Christians. After the joyful celebrations of Christmas and Epiphany, it is vital for Christians to set aside time to repent, meditate, and reflect on the fact that Jesus’ life was a buildup to the ultimate sacrifice of himself on the Cross for our sins. In The Word Has Come Down, Huener guides participants through the ashes of repentance of Ash Wednesday, journeying through the Last Supper of Maundy Thursday and the crucifixion of Good Friday, culminating in the revelation of the risen Jesus at Easter. Along the way, Huener stops to look at each of the main characters in these events, people like Caiaphas, Peter, Judas, Pontius Pilate, and the women at the tomb, allowing each one to tell their side of the story. Huener explores each character in detail, allowing each one to flesh out this central event in Christian history. Whether used for congregational worship, small group study, or personal Lenten devotions, The Word Has Come Down will draw its readers into the beauty, agony, and triumph of Lent and Easter. Beth Huener is the pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oregon, Ohio, a suburb of Toledo. She has also served at other Lutheran parishes in Ohio and West Virginia.

  • Beyond Forgiveness : Reflections On Atonement

    $19.95

As indispensable as forgiveness has been to the healing process throughout history, there is another equally profound action that is needed for ultimate reconciliation, which Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas Gandhi, calls “the other side of the coin.” Turning over the coin of forgiveness, we discover “atonement,” the half-hidden, much-overlooked other half of the reconciliation process.

“Beyond Forgiveness” shows how acts of atonement–making amends, providing restitution, restoring balance–can relieve us of the pain of the past and give us a hopeful future. This rich and powerful book includes 15 thoughtful contributions by high-profile thinkers and activists including Huston Smith, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Azim Khamisa, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Jacob Needleman, Michael Nagler, Diane Hennacy Powell, James O’Dea, Arun Gandhi, Kate Dahlstedt, Ed Tick, Richard J. Meyer, Rev. Heng Sure, Douglas George-Kanentiio and Katharine Dever. Atonement is put forward as a process that we must all learn to practice–from individuals to nations–if we are to heal our wounds and move forward.

  • Kingdom And The Cross

    IVP Print On Demand Title

We believe a lot of false narratives about the nature of God, things like “God helps those who help themselves”; “God blesses the righteous”; “God might not be out for your good, and you might be missing something.” But pastor and professor James Bryan Smith points us to the truth of who God is, revealed by Jesus: A God who loves to help the helpless. A God who doesn’t play favorites, whether righteous or unrighteous. A God who is, in his essence, self-sacrificing–even to death–to save a people he loves. In six short chapters, The Kingdom and the Cross zooms in on Christ’s work on the cross and what it all means about who God is and how we’re to live as his people. A soul training exercise is included for each chapter to help the new true narrative take root in our hearts. And a discussion guide at the end makes this complement to The Apprentice Series perfect for groups to work through together, especially during the season of Lent. Understanding Christ’s work on the cross is crucial for any apprentice of Jesus. Here is a resource to help you see–and believe–more fully, that you might live more faithfully in his kingdom.

    Additional Info
The purpose of this book is two-fold. First, it examines critically how the field of pastoral counseling has responded to the resurgence of interest in issues of spirituality, particularly the appropriation of various texts on spiritually-oriented psychotherapies in counseling. Second, moving beyond description, the book addresses the need to re-define the identity and practice of pastoral counselors as contemplative healers by appropriating insights from the rich tradition of contemplative spirituality, theology, and psychology, and to integrate this identity with professional standards and practices.

The Contemplative Counselor extends the discourse on pastoral counseling beyond theories and techniques to include a focal description of a life lived in active contemplation. The contemplative approach to life, care, and counseling demands a daily call to surrender the underlying attitude of meritocracy that heavily emphasizes good works to produce successful results in counseling. At a fundamental level, the contemplative counselor exhibits an unwavering reliance on the grace of God, which transforms all that is descriptive of the counseling encounter. Here, being precedes becoming, and the act of counseling emanates from the deep and quiet center characterized by silence and solitude of the heart. Such counseling targets holistically body, mind, and spirit as a way of facilitating an experience of well being and transformation.

  • Analogy Of Being

    $51.99

Explores whether human minds can truly discover God without Christ

Does all knowledge of God come through Christ alone, or can human beings discover truths about God philosophically? This volume of essays by expert Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox theologians examines the relationship between divine revelation through the person of Jesus Christ and human reason.

These essays are the continuation of a lively, decades-long debate between Karl Barth and Erich Przywara, first sparked in 1932 when Barth wrote that the use of natural theology in the Catholic tradition was the “invention of the anti-Christ.” In The Analogy of Being, contributors analyze and reflect on both sides of the controversy and look deeply into such topics as the role of metaphysical thinking in theology, the nature and grace of human knowledge of God, and the Trinitarian structure of divine revelation and action.
